One of the most important things a physics tutor should do for their student is to let them try and solve problems on their own and then if they need help, give them the necessary tools and support. Most of the time a student is worried about getting a question wrong, and a tutors responsibility is to help encourage them to learn from their…

In my opinion, two things should be expected from a physics tutor. The first is fairly obvious, and that is good quality teaching. Without this, a student would gain very little from their time with the tutor. The other being, time and effort. I personally believe this is as important as the first because a driven and motivated tutor would not…

One of the most important things a physics tutor can do for a student is provide a structured learning environment. Often, the biggest source of exam-related stress is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material and not seeing the connections between topics. A tutor should help students make sense of this by summarizing key concepts and looking…

I think a physics tutor can help a student to boost confidence in a situation where a little more dedicated time and effort could make possible. A tutor can develop a learning strategy that the student can follow, to make a difficult or boring subject easier and interesting to learn. Undivided attention by a tutor, which would help the…

Inside SuccessTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sara worked on multiplication and division of fractions, as well as measuring the area and perimeter of rectangles.

Year 8 student Jack practised solving equations in the form y = mx + c and sketched linear graphs using graph paper to reinforce coordinate skills.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Chloe focused on finding gradients, midpoints, and lengths of lines, then moved on to algebraic solving of equations for revision before an upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written steps led to confusion when combining x and y terms—"he tries to do long winding questions in his head when they are far easier to write down," one tutor noted.

A Year 11 student became overwhelmed by complex equations without visual aids; this slowed problem solving and sometimes caused negative signs to be swapped.

In Year 4, incomplete homework on fractions revealed shaky understanding, especially when linking fractions to decimals or ratios.

For a younger learner in Year 2, hesitation after mistakes meant less independent thinking during basic addition tasks, with confidence dipping noticeably mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Success tutor noted a high school student who previously forgot to carry over variables during algebra simplification now consistently checks both sides of equations, reducing small errors.

Another older student, after struggling with negative indices and BIMDAS rules, now works through index problems independently and applies order of operations accurately without prompts.

In the primary years, Xavier—who initially needed reminders to identify odd and even numbers—now recognises them correctly by session end and actively enjoys practicing addition games, showing much greater willingness to tackle new types of problems without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Success Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hammond Park Primary School.
