I think an english tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. I think tutors need to teach their students the importance of practice and resilience, especially in VCE. English is a subject which takes lots of practice and…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to be a non-judgemental listener. It is important for a tutor to listen to anything a student might ask, and to make them feel comfortable enough to ask questions in the first place. I believe I am incredibly patient while teaching and mentoring. I very clearly understand that…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is be a good mentor and teacher. Literal academic success is amazing but the most important thing for a tutor is to be apart of a student's knowledge growing and strengthening. I consider personal growth and development to be immensely important and helping a student achieve their own…

The most important thing an english tutor can do is to build up a student's self belief so they can continue improving and reach their goals, whether they be academic or not. Tutoring is about giving a student the space they need to make mistakes, and teaching them that it is okay to make them. It is important that a student and tutor can build…

The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. By the time I have finished a term (or 2) with my student's, they are more confident, more intuitive and approach their work with excitement. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

First things is to make them feel comfortable so that they can so their doubts. Next, understand the prior knowledge of a student and then give examples on the problems based on that. It helps them to understand various concepts easily and they start building interest in studies. Lastly, try to make education interesting for them! My main…

Develop a good rapport with the student so they are open to expressing their fears/weaknesses. For students who struggle, helping them understand basic/intermediate concepts is a big step. Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

A tutor can show a student why instead of just how. Students step into academics and are shown what to do and how to do it, but they don't understand why until much later on in life. A tutor is in a way a parent, trying to teach their child. Essentially, their future depends on how well they have been prepared, no matter how small the…

Above all, I believe it is the moral support and social relationship as a mentor for the student. Inside SydenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Aaliyah worked through solving linear equations and inequalities, including graphing their solutions on number lines.

In Year 10, Ethan practiced using Venn diagrams and tree diagrams to tackle conditional probability problems and apply the multiplication rule for independent events.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sienna focused on properties of vectors—finding both magnitude and direction of vector sums—with visual support from diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student repeatedly left multiplication homework incomplete and "needed to memorise multiplication tables," which made solving later word problems slow and frustrating.

A Year 8 learner in algebra struggled with linear equations but, as noted, "needs to practice more by himself"—missing independent revision meant mistakes kept recurring.

For a VCE Biology student, exam preparation faltered because practice exams weren't attempted between lessons: "Needs to attempt practice exams. We will be discussing them next lesson." This led to uncertainty with time management and gaps in applying key concepts under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Sydenham tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to check their own work is now finding and correcting their own mistakes during problem-solving sessions.

In another recent high school lesson, a student working on biology exam techniques showed real improvement by using prior knowledge to answer more complex questions—something they'd struggled with before.

Meanwhile, in primary, one Year 4 child who often guessed at answers now openly asks for help when stuck instead of staying silent.

Last week, this same student chose to read out loud the next story chapter without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydenham - Hillside Primary School.
