I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

So far the tutor has connected well with my son to work out what he needs and I am pleased that as they work through the topics, the tutor regularly checks in to ensure my son understands the details of what they are working on.

Inside TomagoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Jack worked on basic multiplication skills and began exploring division using hands-on examples.

In Year 9, most of Emily's lesson focused on algebra—specifically solving equations and simplifying expressions to target her main area of difficulty.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Mia reviewed HSC exam questions from 2017, tackling advanced applications in both calculus and probability for targeted revision.

Recent Challenges

Confidence and exam pressure emerged as significant barriers in senior years. During a Year 12 standard maths test, one student "overcomplicated problems and stressed," leading to avoidable mistakes despite strong content knowledge.

In Year 11, another hesitated to attempt harder questions on the 68-95-99.7 rule, often second-guessing instead of working through uncertainty.

Several students, including in Year 7 algebra, avoided writing full working or used messy layouts—"Tyler's workbook…could be a little more organised and tidy"—which made it difficult to spot errors quickly during practice and revision.

Forgotten homework was noted for primary years; this led to missed opportunities for consolidation when tackling fractions the following week.

Recent Achievements

One Tomago tutor noticed a big shift with Tyler, a Year 7 student who previously relied on his calculator for algebra—he now attempts problems independently and shows his working without prompting.

Another high school student made strong gains in statistics: after struggling with rates and ratios, she can now solve these confidently on her own, even tackling tough exam questions that stumped her before.

In the primary years, one student who found telling time difficult is now completing worksheets unassisted and using clock visuals to explain 'past' and 'to' times during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Raymond Terrace Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunter River High School.
