This lesson, Lawson and I focused on balancing equations and probability as well as punctuation and grammar exercises. Lawson was given a balancing equations worksheet and was able to do all of them without any help, however he did have some problems with multiplication particularly multiples of 7. Next we worked on probability an unit Lawson had already done in school so he was able to complete the worksheet without any help. To continue on with probability we played a card game where we had to calculate the probability of a card being picked up. Using different categories, Lawson was able to calculate the probabilities and use the appropriate fractions. Lastly, we went through punctuation and grammar which was a helpful exercise and Lawson was able to do with little difficulty. Overall, Lawson has made huge progress in terms of being able to explain how he had gotten the answer, clearly showing all the steps, which led to less small errors. Lawson is also picking up on the methods we worked through together and being able to apply them.
A recurring mistake Lawson seems to make is multiples specifically 7 and higher, which is why I have reccomened a multiplication table poster to help him memorize them. Lawson also struggled a bit with punctuation with two clauses, however, after some help, he was able to recognise how to find where to place commas when necessary. Other than that Lawson is doing very well and progressing in both Maths and English.

This session, Peyton and I went through time, specifically time word problems, and some English which included understanding simple, compound and complex sentences. Peyton and I worked through an elapsed time worksheet which I thought would be a bit difficult but with a little help Peyton was able to answer all the questions. I found it helped her to have a visual represenetation (drawing the time on a whiteboard) as well as to show the time on a number line and use the JUMP strategy to show the time passing (e.g 7:30 + 15 mins —> 7:30 + 10 mins + 5 mins). Using a number line really helped her understand this. We also went through some fractions practice questions and Peyton was doing very well at understanding the denominator and how many ‘pieces’ to cut it into. The questions were about sixths, eights and halves so I thought she was progressing very well. I think Peyton understands Time to a good level and we will continue to work on it while also introducing new topics.
In the worksheet Peyton found a question similar to 10:30 + and hour and a half to be very diffult as the answer was 12 oclock and using the clock made it a bit confusing however we worked through it together and she was able to understand it afterwards. We also went through a simple, compund and complex worksheet that is for Grade 6 however I thought it would still be useful even if it was a bit diffcult. However, Peyton was able to understand some of it and we worked together to identify the different types. Hopefully, in the future she will be able to incorporate these sentence types into her writing when needed.

This session, Lawson and I continued working on fractions and balancing equations as well as using the TEEL paragraph structure and simple, compound and complex sentences. Warming up with a fractions worksheet Lawson was able to answer majority of them correctly, however found multiples of 7 to be a bit difficult. Lawson was able to show his working out both using long division as well as the method I had taught him previously. For English, we revisited using the TEEL structure specifically for writing information reports as that is what Lawson is currently learning in school. Lawson is doing well and understanding the structure and has written a couple of sample paagraphs to practice using it. Overall Lawson is making great progress in Maths especially when it comes to showing his working out and explaining how he got the answer.
The balancing equations worksheet was a bit too difficult but we were able to work through it together and I assigned the rest of it as homework. The difficult part of the worksheet was applying BODMAS however Lawson was able to do it with the first couple then the equations got more difficult progressively. We also went through simple, compund and complex sentences as I was reading his Wonder class work and found his sentences tended to be short and simple so incorporating complex and compound sentences will elevate his writing.

This session, Lawson and I focused on balancing equations, fractions, as well as non-fiction writing in English. Starting with Maths, Lawson completed a balancing equations sheet while I corrrected his math homework. Lawson is showing a lot of improvement in his maths skills particularly with balancing equations, the worksheet was medium difficulty and he managed to get them all corrected without any help frrom me. Lawson was also able to step-by-step show how he solved the equations which is a very important skill to have especially in the future. As such we decided to move onto harder questions next week that will be more challenging for Lawson. For English, Lawson and I focused on persuasive speech writing using the TEEL paragraph structure. During this we discussed audience and informal/formal tone aswell as how to structure a persuasive piece. Lawson was able to write a paragraph for the persuasive speech and incorporated writing elements such as descriptive writing and an engaging hook for his introduction. We will continue to work on persuasive writing as well as start non-fiction information writing.
During this session Lawson and I also went through fraction questions such as 1/8 of 81 and 1/4 of 48. I showed Lawson a method for solving these kind of questions and he was able to understand it immediately however his division and multiplication skills need to be refined a bit to help him solve these equations easily without any help. Overall in Maths Lawson has made great progress especially when it comes to showing his working out and explaining how he got the final answer. In English, Lawson is also improving in his descriptive language and we will move onto simple, complex and compound sentences soon.
