Frankly, needless to say being a good tutor primarily stipulates teaching content in a way that makes it easier to understand. Hence, by default that does become the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. This pursuit can be undertaken via a range of supplementary actions such as engaging classes, use of props, and more. But in doing…

In my opinion it is extremely important to ensure the learner knows that it is safe to not succeed at first as learning is a process full of unsuccessful attempts. This will allow students to participate fearlessly in a tutoring session. Building that trust and relationship with students is an integral part of tutoring. It will enable students to…

I pretty sure that the most important things a tutor can do for students are: 1. Always go at the pace of the students and advance together in each topic you teach. 2. Give students the confidence to ask you any questions they may have in class or after class, no matter how simple it may seem. 3. Always offer the easiest and most dynamic method…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen and be compasionate. By listening a student one is able to understand how they learn, and what they especially need to learn. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, personalise their learning experience, and help them develop skills that go beyond the subject itself. That means not just focusing on content, but also teaching effective study strategies, time management, and resilience when things get challenging. It’s…

Inside Upper Mount GravattTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Shani focused on probability and data analysis, including interpreting simple statistics and practicing basic probability scenarios.

In Year 10, Lara worked through the discriminant in quadratic equations and reviewed linear equations, reinforcing her algebra skills with targeted practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Savio tackled arithmetic and geometric sequences by building recurrence models from information given and practiced rearranging algebraic equations using a step-by-step approach.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, incomplete homework became a pattern—one student "didn't finish the homework I gave," making it harder to build confidence with algebraic conversions.

In Year 10, a student shared she "finds it difficult to motivate herself to study for exams and usually procrastinates until the last minute," which left her rushed during practice sessions and less able to handle time pressure.

A Year 11 student relied on mental calculations in equations, skipping written steps; as noted, "it's better to write down the working steps out than doing mental maths." This made tracing errors nearly impossible under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Upper Mount Gravatt noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her thoughts for English assignments, began catching her own run-on sentences and correcting them independently by the end of their session.

In Year 8 maths, one student who used to quietly guess at answers started openly asking questions whenever unsure—showing real initiative that hadn't been there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student managed to finish all target questions on time for the first time after weeks of needing reminders, handing in her completed worksheet without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Garden City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Upper Mount Gravatt State School.
