As a tutor apart from the subject we need to teach ethics, moral values. And how to overcome the problems they are facing in a day to day life. My major strength is my experience. Because I've been teaching so long I've taught almost every course we offer. As a result, I've told both my chairman and the Principal to do my classes last; I'll be…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to listen and understand from the students perspective, so that they are able to teach them in the manner that is best for the student. At the end of the day, if the student is able to gain the satisfaction of conquering even the smallest of concepts with the help of their tutor,…

A tutor should be able to personalise and adapt to each and every student. I think, its a tutor's responsibility in helping the student to understand their inner potential by suggesting ways to broaden their skill sets, pushing their boundary to convey that there is much to learn in life. Other than being a punctual and effective educator, I am flexible by allowing my students to learn in their own phase. It makes them…

A tutor should always appear calm and patient, providing the student with encouragement and support. This is to ensure the tutor does not cause any additional counterproductive stress to the student. However, a tutor should be honest to a student with the work to be done, as only then will the student gain the quality service they deserve. A…

When I went to school, I recall that a lot of the subjects that I took particular interest in were due to the quality of instruction from the teacher. My belief is that children are naturally inquisitive and therefore it is important for a teacher / tutor to tap into that potential by employing the right style of communication, presentation and…

A tutor needs to genuinely want the students to learn out of every session and care for the students. The tutor needs to be 100% focused on every second of the session. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is recognise what, precisely, the student is struggling with and to tailor explanations of concepts in ways that the student will respond to. For example, a major conceptual hurdle for high school students can be learning about logarithms for the first time. Often the root of confusion…

A tutor should provide a safe space for the student, both academically and mentally. It is important that a tutor empathizes with the students and provide them vivid and interesting perspectives about the subjects which goes beyond school learning. Furthermore, it is needed that the tutor - student relationship be a team work, where the tutor is…

In addition to improving the student's understanding of a particular subject area, the real value comes from: (1) learning *how* to learn; in other words, getting to understand the many resources available (web and paper), attacking the problem, and getting the answer independently. This is empowering for the student, and essential for further…

Fiona, Wahroonga

Inside WahroongaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia worked through calculating area and perimeter as well as practicing addition and subtraction for accuracy.

In Year 10, Ethan focused on solving trigonometric equations and revising the use of the quadratic formula to find roots of parabolas, using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Grace tackled factorisation of algebraic expressions and reviewed linear systems by working through simultaneous equation applications from recent classwork.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often left homework incomplete, particularly on networks, making it difficult to build fluency before exams—"needs to complete homework provided."

In Year 7, messy written work in measurement meant marks were lost when working steps weren't shown.

A senior student (Year 11) avoided attempting harder trigonometry questions, focusing only on familiar problems and losing confidence with new material.

Another Year 12 student relied heavily on the formula sheet during revision rather than memorising key formulas; this slowed progress in timed conditions.

When feedback was given on careless errors in algebra, it was not always acted upon immediately.

Recent Achievements

One Wahroonga tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid seeking clarification now actively asks questions when stuck, especially during trigonometry sessions—this shift has made her much quicker at correcting mistakes.

In Year 12 maths, another student who previously hesitated with worded problems recently showed new independence by forming equations on his own and identifying where he'd gone wrong without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with step-by-step problem solving managed to follow each stage for finding x and finished all ten practice questions accurately in their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Knox Grammar School - Wahroonga Preparatory Campus.
