I believe a tutor should be a role model for the students and encourage him/her on their academic journey. I have found that many times students don't have proper guidance in regards to academics, hence they develop this stigma that they are not smart enough. As a tutor my role is to encourage the students to not only do better in school but also…

A tutor must be able to approach problems/concepts in different ways until they find the best way that the kid understands. Teachers have method that suit the whole class, whereas tutors must be able to look deeper into the specific areas a kid is struggling in and answer their questions that take longer and more practice. Tutors must be able to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is create a space free of judgment, as this will invite the student to feel comfortable and thus promote engagement and the voicing of questions regarding misunderstandings. The latter is essential to the progression of learning. Furthermore, I think it is very important to tailor teaching methods…

Inside WatsoniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student worked through chapter four on complex numbers and tackled vectors from chapter two, focusing on problem-solving with worked examples.

For Year 11, time was spent reviewing logs, exponents, and compound interest calculations, clarifying methods step-by-step.

A Year 6 student practised multiplying decimals using exponents and reinforced understanding of the 3x and 5x tables through targeted exercises.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related challenges emerged across different year levels.

In Year 11, a student tackling advanced algebra needs to slow down and write out each equation, as skipping steps in quadratic proofs led to hidden errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with work layout—her method for factorizing was hard for others to follow, making it tough to trace calculation paths.

For a Year 7 learner, not keeping diagrams bold and clear meant key features were missed when drawing geometric figures.

In upper primary, times tables revision often focused only on easier sets, so gaps remained with the 6x and 7x tables.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia tutor recently saw a Year 12 student finally grasp de Moivre's theorem, confidently using it to multiply and divide complex numbers—something that had caused hesitation before.

In another session, a Year 10 student who used to rely on the tutor for every step with Pythagoras' Theorem is now solving problems independently and even checking their own work for errors.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised their tutor by breaking down an irregular area question into parts without prompting, after previously struggling to start these on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia Primary School.
