Help the student figure out their own study methods, as tutoring can only get you so far within an hour of time. The real magic is when the student can apply techniques outside of supervised study. I treat my students like a friend, as I found that when I was tutored similarly it really helped with the dynamic, as well as increased honesty and…

A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a chemistry tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Not everyone thinks the same, and its important for a tutor to understand this, and to move at a pace that suits the student, whilst also…

A tutor can build a child's confidence, boost them to achieve higher. Help them to ask questions because they will learn from that. Furthermore if it is hard for a student to understand something, a chemistry tutor should try a different approach so that the student understands better. The tutor should come up with new learning strategies. As a…

As a student myself, I understand why students find some maths or chemistry concepts very difficult and many of them struggled when faced with homework or exam problems related to it. I believe this is due to the lack of proper explanation of the fundamental theory behind those problems since teachers in school do not have enough time to commit…

Throughout my education, I liked those teachers who would inspire me to solve the problem by myself rather than giving the information directly. For me, the most important thing is the ability to solve a problem using the right methods. To tutor is to guide them to the right direction and help students avoid the common mistakes. I have excellent…

In my opinion, patience is the most important. Tutor is different from a teacher because as a chemistry tutor, it allows us more time to explain, and allows students more time to ask. Only if I show patience, my students are not afraid to keep asking. I think this is the whole point of tutoring. I grow up in an asian city so I had a lot of…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to equip the student with the skills to find answers and explore the subject on their own. Whenever my students ask me questions outside of the syllabus, I involve them in the process of looking up papers and interpreting scientific language. I am able to come up with analogies to help students…

I have been demoted to the bottom class, twice in my school years and it would be selfish of me not to share how I overcame my own insecurities with others on a similar path. One of the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student is provide a structured learning environment. Often, the biggest source of exam-related stress is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material and not seeing the connections between topics. A tutor should help students make sense of this by summarizing key concepts and…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

Inside WillageeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Paige worked through real numbers, estimation, and the multiplication and division of decimals, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement.

Year 8 Oli concentrated on solving linear equations using graphs and revising properties of quadrilaterals in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 9 Isabel practiced trigonometry questions and completed a mock test to identify strengths and weaknesses ahead of her assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly skipped reviewing previous lesson notes, which meant class time was used reteaching old multiplication techniques instead of advancing ("we had to go back and repeat some multiplication techniques").

In Year 10, one learner struggled with algebra worded problems—hesitating to write out working, which made it hard to spot where the translation from words to equations broke down.

A Year 4 student found expressing number facts in writing difficult; this sometimes slowed progress when practicing sums with larger numbers or using inequality symbols.

Missed homework and unorganised files led to extra confusion during sessions for a senior student revising real numbers.

Recent Achievements

A Willagee tutor recently noticed that a Year 10 student, Abbi, who previously needed help with factorising quadratics, now solves standard quadratic equations independently and completes her homework using the elimination method without prompting.

In Year 11, Isabel showed a shift from just following steps to confidently creating algebraic equations from worded problems—a skill she found challenging last term.

Meanwhile, Xavier in Year 3 has started counting numbers and solving addition problems on his own after weeks of needing reminders; he now initiates his work without cues from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caralee Community School.
