I believe the most important role of a tutor is to nurture a student’s genuine curiosity and foster their willingness to overcome challenges through problem-solving and critical thinking. These skills not only support academic success but also prepare them to navigate and thrive in real-world situations. The ability to recognise and adapt to…

Focus on what the student is understanding. While it is easy to just teach content to a student it doesn't necessarily mean that they are absorbing all of that content. As a tutor is it important to work alongside the student to ensure that they are understanding of everything you teach. A student can only improve if they have a secure knowledge…

Not all students are modelled the same way. Some are able to learn by studying the books while others require a lot of practice. Hence I believe that teaching the student how to study based on his or her strengths is the best thing a tutor can do and I will strive to achieve that at all costs. I spend a lot of time communicating with the student…

the most important thing is for the tutor to teach how the student best learns. We are not in large class rooms, so we have the luxury, to teach in specific ways, that might only be good for that one student. I'm patient and can therefore spend as much time as the student needs on any given topic. I'm thorough, so I make sure there are no…

I think the most important thing is to instil them with confidence, as I have found that this is one of the biggest problems that slow down the understanding of something. Something new can look very daunting, especially when it comes to maths. Because of my experience a a recent student, I can more easily understand the road blocks that cause…

Maths can sometimes be frustrating for students, with a lot of students often becoming convinced that maths 'isn't their thing'. A tutor should always be supportive and encouraging whatever the situation, and help bring the most out of their students' maths learning. One of my strengths as a tutor is my communication. Explaining simply the crux of…

Good tutor is not someone that can easily give good and best answer to the student. Good teacher is someone who explain logic and ideas behind the problem. Good teacher is someone who helps the student to generate ideas and polish the quality of the student. Einstein famous proverb tells us that " Make things as simple as possible, but not…

The most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, foster a growth mindset, and provide clarity. A tutor should help students feel safe to express confusion and ask questions without judgment. It’s also vital to help students see that mistakes are part of learning and that progress comes with persistence. Lastly, a…

I believe a tutor/teacher should always strive to develop an interest about subject matter in the student. Teaching at various levels has taught me to understand students from different academic backgrounds better. Every student has a different…

Inside YarrambatTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia worked on simplifying and adding surds, then applied multiplying surds to solve rectangle area problems.

Year 10 student Ben focused on linear equations, plotting points on the number plane, and finding rules for straight-line graphs using real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled exponential and logarithmic functions in Maths Methods, as well as practising derivatives and transformations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Physics, one student hesitated to attempt complex application questions unless prompted—"there was a lot of pushback when it came to learning a topic he appeared to struggle with during his test." This avoidance slowed progress, especially with transformations and visual problems.

In Year 8 Mathematics, another student relied heavily on calculators for multiplication and division; this meant that mental fluency lagged behind class expectations.

A Year 3 English learner showed agitation when asked to write full sentences, making written tasks feel overwhelming.

In each case, process challenges—not content gaps—limited independent practice and confidence in new situations.

Recent Achievements

One Yarrambat tutor noted that a Year 10 student who had struggled with surds now confidently simplifies them and even tackles rationalising denominators on her own.

In senior secondary, Sachin initially felt uncertain about complex calculus rules, but after targeted sessions, he independently solved chain, product, and quotient rule questions—showing real initiative by working through his question booklet without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student, previously hesitant to check his answers when mistakes happened, is now actively correcting himself during lessons and willingly attempts tougher algebra problems above his year level. Last session, he completed every question the tutor set for him.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarrambat Primary School.
