I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. I know I am good at interacting with my students,…

Give them time and space. I believe these two aspects are the most important thing we can give students but understanding how to manage these two factors as a tutor we give the private space for them to develop as well as provide them with help when they require us. I am very patient and outgoing, therefore it is easy for students to ask me…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students in interact and engage with them, as this allows for the tutor to know the students and vice versa. This allows for an environment where students are willing to engage in class, as well as one where students do not feel afraid or embarrassed to ask questions or for help. My biggest…

Every learner owns unique interests and special skills, therefore, understanding their potential and guide them with appropriate approaches is the most important things a tutor can do for a student As a tutor, my strengths are a personalized teaching style and cohesive explanation. Basically, depending on student's demands and competence, I would…

Set them on the right path. Helping them to understand concepts and develop skills (rather than just doing things for them) will mean that they can go on to use these skills themselves. This is very important for exam-taking. Communication. I ask for their input and check that they understand what I'm saying. I am patient and will explain a…

I consider guiding my student to be able to make the connections and grow in their confidence in their skills relating to the subject to be the most important thing a tutor can do. A tutor\'s first duty must be to create a comfortable environment for the student to learn. This means serving as a friend, and as someone who is receptive and understanding to the needs of the student. It is through this that students will grow and be most efficient in their studies. As a humanities oriented tutor, my strengths lie in my ability…

Helping them to develop their own learning style, or styles, to perform in a variety of circumstances is one of the most critical things a tutor can impart on a student. Examinations and content will never be delivered in the exact same way, so providing students with the means to navigate the ambiguities of examination and focus purely on the…

The most important thing that a tutor can teach his student is 'how to learn'. You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day but when you teach the man how to fish you can feed him for a lifetime and that is the impact I would like to have on the student. Patience is inherent to my personality and I find that this is the single most valuable…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is help them understand concepts that may seem impossible to them because they can then view learning in a completely different viewpoint. This helps them have an open mind towards learning instead of viewing it as something tedious. As such, being understanding and empathetic…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to unlock their potential. It’s not just about explaining concepts—it’s about making the student believe they can conquer anything. A tutor should inspire confidence, turning frustration into progress, and showing students they’re capable of more than they think. It’s about being…

Inside AsquithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily practised writing equivalent fractions and solving for missing numbers in fraction equations.

In Year 8, Cameron worked through straight line graphs—covering y = mx + b, x and y intercepts—and completed a review of his recent exam.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jess focused on trigonometry with school homework using SOH CAH TOA, as well as applying the sine and cosine rules to solve problems involving non-right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, a student hesitated to answer even when correct, as one tutor noted: "She felt unsure of herself and her answer even if right," which slowed participation in times tables work.

A Year 8 student's written solutions in algebra missed key steps; as the tutor put it, "working out wasn't shown systematically," so small errors went undetected until review.

In senior grades, one student struggled to break down multi-step trigonometry problems—attempting whole questions at once led to confusion over formulas and layout.

Another forgot formula sheets at home, making practice incomplete and feedback harder to apply during revision.

Recent Achievements

One Asquith tutor noticed a Year 8 student who used to skip steps when solving equations now showing every stage of their working without reminders, making fewer errors as a result.

In a recent session with a Year 10 student, the tutor observed her choosing the correct formula for trigonometry problems independently—something she hesitated to attempt last term.

Meanwhile, during primary sessions, one younger learner who previously guessed answers in times tables drills began pausing to work them out methodically before responding. The same lesson finished with him tackling mixed multiplication questions without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hornsby Shire Library & Information Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Asquith Public School.
