Be outgoing. The worst thing is for a student to be scared to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

The most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is providing as much information as they can. Answer their questions, solve their problems, and make sure that they really understand the material. I am a very good listener. When a student is facing difficulty, I believe the problem is communication. Talk to them and try to find out what is…

Definitely to be patient and to never assume knowledge as known or simple. Further to focus on not just content, but also mark schemes for maximum success. I would be a great tutor because I combine strong academic ability with genuine care for the people I’m teaching. Academically, I have a solid foundation in Mathematics, Economics, and…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. I have been tutoring students…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

Tutors must be able to demonstrate openness towards the needs of each student and help to better understand a students situation. I feel that the ability to carefully understand the certain needs and goals of each student and provide particular guidance and assistance a long the way to achieving these goals is crucial in tutoring, rather than…

My philosophy as a tutor revolves around three fundamental principles: patience, care, and clarity. Patience is at the heart of my teaching approach. I believe that learning isn't about rushing through content, but about facilitating comprehension at each student's pace. My mission goes beyond delivering lectures - I am committed to ensuring…

Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. If a student has last minute issues the night before their exam it is important that they can rely on their tutor to get back to them by the end of the day with an answer. I am patient…

Inside Canada BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake practiced using the OREO structure for persuasive writing and built vocabulary through word association games.

Year 7 Charlotte focused on mastering factor trees to break down numbers and then used these skills to solve square roots of larger numbers.

In Year 9, Angelique revised algebraic expressions by expanding and factorising them in preparation for an upcoming test, working through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to submit homework, even after completing it—this left gaps in class discussion and slowed his writing progress.

As noted by a tutor, "he got distracted by his laptop during research tasks," which meant key questions were left unfinished.

In Year 10 English, a student rushed timed persuasive writing and missed important details, leading to weaker arguments under pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student skipped re-reading passages in comprehension tasks, causing her to miss vital information; she often answered from memory instead of checking the text, making mistakes that could have been avoided with slower reading.

Recent Achievements

A Canada Bay tutoring session saw one high school student shift from relying on reminders about BODMAS to independently solving all her mixed-operation maths problems by the end of the lesson.

Another older student, who previously hesitated with Pythagoras' Theorem, now confidently finds missing triangle sides and checks if a triangle is right-angled without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner moved from avoiding tricky homophones to spelling them correctly and explaining their meanings aloud, after initially expressing doubt.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Concord High School.
