As someone who has personally experienced anxiety due to academic pressure, I deeply understand how stress can block learning. My own struggles with grades have taught me that the most important role of a tutor is to create a safe, patient space where mistakes are welcomed as part of the process. I focus not just on academic content, but on…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

Teach genuinely, give out all information they know of the subject. To choose sharing knowledge over money. To have patients to deal with any kind of student since each student could have a different speed of learning or picking up. My strengths would be that I am a young, patient teacher who can teach any type of student. I have the ability to…

The most important thing I think is for the tutor to build confidence in a student. To do this, I believe continual encouragement is required and something I always aim to do. Patience and the ability to remain calm at all times. I am also very persistent and will try a variety of methods that will allow the student to see concepts from a variety…

A tutor can tailor there style much more closely to the individual needs of the student, provide a more focused approach and cover the material the student needs help with the most, and go beyond the basic material to challenge the student and inspire them to learn. A tutor's most important job is to create a positive and supportive learning environment, change the way they teach based on the student's unique learning style, and boost the student's confidence in their own skills. Tutors can help students build a strong base of information and skills by making them feel comfortable enough to ask questions and…

Consistency. I have been a tutor to some students for over a year. In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

To inspire them, to teach them, to help them and to be a role model. We can have fun during activities and do serious work when we should. It is through the Tutor that the student will probably choose his field for his career, so the Tutor has to be really encouraging. The best thing my methods tutor did for me in year 12 was by far to cut out the crap and stretched analogies. To learn things simply for what they are. By understanding principles in a simple and raw way, the originally complex problems were solved at a glance, leaving only the problem of writing down the working I had already seen in my mind. …

I think the most important thing, and probably the greatest thing I can give to students is inspiration. My subject knowledge is something they should be able to take for granted. This involves going beyond simply solving problems or answering questions, but rather, helping students develop critical thinking skills and a genuine interest in the topic.…

Inside DeepdeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Bob worked through a summary of key Year 7 Maths concepts to identify strengths and areas needing support, including integers and angles from the start of the Year 8 syllabus.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons focused on quadratic equations—specifically factorising using grouping methods and the null factor law—and also included expanding expressions and solving equations.

Another high schooler tackled statistics by reviewing standard deviation calculations and working through their school's statistics worksheet for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, a student was observed struggling to apply prime factorisation in square root problems during a practice test; skipping written steps made errors harder to catch.

In VCE Maths Methods, another arrived without their CAS calculator or workbook, which slowed progress on calculus tasks and left them less able to ask targeted questions.

For a Year 10 algebra lesson, messy working and missing units led to incorrect answers that were difficult to trace—one tutor noted, "they didn't label their answers or show clear reasoning." These habits caused confusion and wasted time revisiting old ground instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Deepdene tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to skip over tricky problems, but now shows their working step-by-step and checks each answer for accuracy.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them actively ask questions instead of staying silent when confused—something they'd avoided before—and even correct their own mistakes without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised their tutor by solving money word problems independently after struggling with basic addition just weeks earlier.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Good Counsel School.
