Empathy is essential for a teacher. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if a student doesn’t understand a topic yet or feels behind academically. Human values like patience and kindness matters more. I try to be patient and creative in my teaching. I understand how fascinating mathematics can be when explained in the right way, which is…

Helping them in a way that allows them to complete questions on their own, but also learn from the tutor. Ie, giving indicators on whether they are going right or wrong in a question and making them figure out where they messed up. My strengths as a tutor is being able to explain a concept really simply and getting the basic down so that it is…

Give them time and space. I believe these two aspects are the most important thing we can give students but understanding how to manage these two factors as a tutor we give the private space for them to develop as well as provide them with help when they require us. I believe it is vital that a student feels as though they have accomplished something at the end of each session and that there is a sense of progression felt for the student after each session. A tutor should be able to make the student work at a comfortable pace that does not stress them out or make them feel uncomfortable. Lastly, I believe a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to unlock their potential. It’s not just about explaining concepts—it’s about making the student believe they can conquer anything. A tutor is simply an extension of learning tool from school, when students feel like school's teaching may not be sufficient. A tutor must be able to accurately evaluate the student's level and how strong their understandings are, and design their lessons accordingly. Flexibly tailored lesson plans for students, as it is 1 on 1, are a must for the…

A tutor can be the support for a student who’s struggling with their studies. They are neither their teach nor a parent that the child has to be self conscious around and can have a friendship with them giving the student a peaceful mind so they can give their full attention while being tutored. Being able to simplify things for students and…

Inside Denistone EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mada worked on understanding positive and negative integers before focusing on rates and ratios as covered in class.

In Year 8, Amelia spent time revising algebra skills and then practiced solving problems involving rates and ratios for her upcoming assessment.

For Year 11, Mey tackled exponential and logarithmic equations as well as integration techniques to prepare for an assessment task.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete her homework for two consecutive weeks, which meant lesson time was spent catching up instead of learning new concepts.

In Year 11, a student described struggling with test timing; as one tutor noted, "she needs to practice under timed conditions" to avoid unfinished exam sections.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner often skipped writing out working in algebra questions—leading to repeated sign errors that slowed progress.

A Year 10 student showed low confidence when facing multi-step word problems and hesitated to attempt unfamiliar formats, especially during area and perimeter tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Denistone East noticed that one Year 11 student, who previously hesitated with trigonometric proofs, was able to independently prove identities by the end of the lesson—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance before.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student started attempting harder algebra word problems on his own after usually sticking only to basics; he even asked for clarification when stuck instead of giving up.

In primary sessions, Alexis (Year 4) managed all her area and volume questions without mistakes and remembered her times tables clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Denistone East Public School.
