A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I like to address the doubts of students and solve them immediately. I also frequently ask them if they've got any further questions and I keep…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

Build a healthy relationship with student and help them build a healthy relationship with learning in general so they don't dread showing up to class/tutor feeling like they don't belong. Firstly, it is essential that a tutor encourages a comprehensive understanding of content, as opposed to rote learning in an attempt to 'get good grades'. For example, instead of simply making a student memorise a formula, a tutor should explain its theory, why it works and how to apply it in various contexts. This understanding ensures that they…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

The best thing a teacher can do to a student is to adapt to student's learning style. In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim to build…

Inside DerrimutTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emma revised quadratic equations and functions, focusing on graph interpretation and problem-solving; Year 10 student Lucas tackled trigonometry by graphing sine and cosine functions, along with a review of transformations to strengthen his foundation; meanwhile, Year 3 student Zoe practiced multiplication facts and solved word problems involving money using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, one student was "a bit lax with her homework," leading to missed practice on application questions and slower progress in trigonometry graphing.

In a senior English session, skipping questions when unsure meant some tasks were left incomplete and unattempted until prompted.

A Year 5 learner's written work was described as "hard to follow," with untidy layout making it difficult to check for errors—especially in multi-step problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly avoided challenging multiplication questions, returning only to familiar material and requiring frequent reminders to persist when tasks became unfamiliar or effortful.

Recent Achievements

One Derrimut tutor noted a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess at problems but now regularly asks for help when stuck, especially during complex homework—she completed nearly all tasks this week and initiated questions on her own.

A high schooler in Year 9 has started challenging herself by choosing harder questions for practice, getting them right on recent assignments after previously sticking only to basics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recite times tables can now confidently recall them aloud without prompting and tackled double-digit multiplication with less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Derrimut Primary School.
