A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Sometimes its difficult to read what is going inside a students head and maybe student says he/she understands the subject but in reality they are just shy to ask questions As a tutor I can have some informal tests to see whether the student is understanding. A good tutor should always focus on qualitative approach rather than quantitative…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share his/her knowledge, ensure the difficulties are solved together, students could enjoy the learning process, and students understand why they are studying (importance of education). And this is all possible with a tutor with relevant subject knowledge and ability to position…

I think the most important steps are, making sure the student has understood, even if you have to re-explain the concept an n number of times or in a multiple different ways, and providing support whenever the student needs it. I hate tutors that charge for help given outside of their class times, or those who specifically arrange for short…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Thirdly, a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to support the student throughout their school year as I understand that students during this time can go through a lot of pressure and deal with factors outside of their control. It is our responsibility as tutors to patiently guide the students on the right path and make sure students understand the…

Being patient and having an attentive ear so that a student can build confidence in asking questions. Explaining the concepts clearly by adapting to each child's learning style is also important. A good tutor should not only teach students the answers to questions, but also the principles and processes behind the questions. Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
