Ultimately, a tutor only has so much time each week with a student and so I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students discover their own affinity for a particular subject and inspire them to carry out their own research. To this end, it is crucial to welcome curiosity and not to limit their imagination by restricting them…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel at ease with the subject at hand, especially to the point where they begin their own individual methods of inquiry into the subject. A student should never feel under pressure to perform in ways that make them feel discouraged about their own abilities. The consequence of that is…

I believe achieving high scores isnt everything for a student. Being able to achieve more than that is whats important. It is true and no doubt that high grades can allow one to enter into a great university with a good degree. However, it is more important on how the students choose the right path in their lives that can make them happy and heart…

Provide a safe learning space and encourage determination as well as helping them set reasonable academic goals. It is also important that they learn to enjoy learning things. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Most of the students, do not feel very confident in their own understanding of the subject and hesitate to participate in class discussions. I believe by making the student…

1. Revise fundamental concepts as they are essential to solve more complex problems. 2. Always break down the question before trying to solve problems. This makes the problem become simpler to solve and stimulates recall of the basic concepts that they have learnt before. 3. Always summarise what has been learnt as this helps to consolidate…

Show the student how to learn something. If a tutor can explain another way of looking at problems so that the student understands how to approach them, its the most useful thing for them. A good tutor should help their student develop a love for what they are learning. When this is done successfully, this has a knock-on effect on the student's results as they are more engaged with the content they are learning. This starts with the tutor being passionate about the content they are teaching and being determined to push the student…

Inside GlebeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Chloe focused on solving algebraic equations by finding the value of x and practiced simplifying expressions, as well as working through percentage problems such as increasing or decreasing values and calculating GST.

In Year 9, Liam worked on ratios and rates with practical examples and was introduced to basic factorisation skills.

For a younger learner in Year 5, Emma strengthened her understanding of area calculations alongside strategies for division using visual models.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student missed a scheduled Zoom lesson, meaning they lost out on targeted feedback just before a key trigonometry assessment.

For one Year 11, "notes were disorganised and it was difficult to find the formulas for cosine rule when revising," which slowed down practice and led to confusion in test conditions.

In Year 8, errors in homework weren't reviewed, so similar mistakes kept appearing with ratios and percentages.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner's times tables practice focused only on familiar numbers—new patterns were avoided if they felt uncertain or slow, causing hesitation when solving multi-step word problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Glebe tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to show working now carefully explains each algebraic step aloud, especially when evaluating tricky fractions.

Another high schooler began the term making frequent errors with quadratic equations but recently completed an entire worksheet without needing hints—self-correcting two mistakes along the way.

For a younger learner in Year 4, times tables had been a real challenge, yet last session he jumped straight into practice questions and got nearly all of them right without prompting or counting on fingers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St James Catholic Primary School.
