As a tutor it's my entire responsibility to know everything about a subject and deliver high quality teaching to my students. So preparation is very important! A tutor needs to make learning sounds interesting and encourage the students to overcome the challenges. The most important thing the tutor could do is to support the students to build…

A tutor can drastically improve a student's confidence in a subject and in their own ability. I think this is really important as this confidence boost will enable them to approach many aspects of their life with less fear, leading to greater opportunities. Throughout my school career I've learned lots about how to study and learn, and I am really…

I think it's incredibly important to respect the student's individuality. All students learn in different ways so it's important for a tutor to be versatile and very adaptable. Explaining concepts in different ways, solving problems using different methods, etc. I also think it's important for tutors to make sure a student understands rather…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the ability of effective self management in their studies. The best thing a tutor can do is to teach them learning strategies and develop a student’s self awareness in their learning, so that the students are more independent and are able to develop their own learning…

Young people respond to humour, warmth and positivity. A large part of a students educational experience is the connection made it the educator. Tutors should execute multiple duties to ensure students' needs are met exceptionally. One duty includes building interpersonal relationships with students and creating a supportive environment so that learners will feel comfortable and encouraged to engage in lessons. Tutors should also have a solid grasp of the concepts being taught. Expertise…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help build their confidence. A student is able to do anything, learn anything but only if they believe that they can do it or learn it. Obviously bumping up grades. But before that comes there is the massive component where the tutor is able to let the student feel like they actually know what they're doing. Instilling confidence in someone and helping them to not feel dumb can change the way they approach learning and improve everything about their academic life. Coming from…

Truly the most important thing any tutor can do for a student is to help create and cultivate a growth mindset. By doing this, students become lifelong, innovative learners. This certainly occurs in the classroom, but teachers are expected to do this to upwards of 20+ children. Tutors are important to students because they assist in expanding…

I think the best tutors teach at a speed that the student requires. If a tutor is impatient, not only does it reduce what the student learns but also discourages them from asking for help. Tutors need to accommodate each specific student, as each one is different. I have been studying for a Bachelor of Law/Arts for the past four years. This study…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. Inside Mermaid WatersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Milly worked on understanding outliers and measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, range), using explanation sheets and practice questions to solidify these concepts.

Year 8 student Ava focused on creating and interpreting frequency tables, including cumulative frequency, gradually building up from basic to more advanced examples.

For Year 10, Liam tackled linear equations by identifying if an equation is linear and calculating values using the y = mx + c form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student hesitated to attempt algebra questions without notes, often looking back at previous examples instead of trusting her own process—she became less confident as soon as an equals sign appeared, noted the tutor.

In Year 7 maths, skipping careful working and not setting out steps neatly led to confusion during factorisation tasks.

For a senior chemistry worksheet, memorising charges was avoided in favour of referencing handouts, slowing progress on balancing equations.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student missed homework deadlines and left some revision incomplete, making it harder to consolidate fractions and decimals across topics.

Recent Achievements

One Mermaid Waters tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get overwhelmed by complex Excel data tasks is now confidently double-checking her answers and referring back to her own summary sheets when stuck, rather than freezing up.

In a recent session with a Year 7 student, the tutor observed genuine improvement in algebra: after initially hesitating, she began identifying the right process for factorising without needing prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once struggled to visualise multiplication surprised her tutor by explaining division using her own diagrams and then tackling two-digit problems independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Broadbeach Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Merrimac State High School.
