It is crucial to understand the particular learning style of each student as everyone is an individual. Furthermore, to remain encouraging and provide motivation where necessary, always remembering that learning is a process and that it is my role to guide the student along that process. Having recently been a high-school student I understand the…

I would like to answer two points which are very important 1. The tutor must understand the feeling of the student so as to understand where he/she is facing problem in the subjects. If you are able to remove the problem you are half way down. 2. If a tutor can make change from students' hate for the subject to love for the subject in my view is…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

Inspire them about how to think about the question and maybe, the world in a logical and rational way. As one of my lecturer once told me, "what I can teach you is not the knowledge itself, but the problem solving skills you learnt from this course". I am energetic in teaching maths and, particularly, in the interesting parts about Maths. E.g. we…

A tutor should be able to analyse the situation and adjust his/her teaching methods accordingly. I am passionate, energetic, motivated and organised. Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. Tutoring help students to get a better grip on the subject. Tutors can give special attention to their students and can solve their doubts and which they don't get clear in the classroom. Students can get in routine to study a subject. I am very patient, if my students cant solve a problem I find out on which step of the solution they are getting…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is important to attempt to answer each question on a test and work sheet as if you attempt it then you might get some points on your final grade. It is also important to become self confident and trust that you can tackle any problem. I will…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. Engage with them in such a way that the student actually wants to be at tutoring sessions. There is no benefit to tutoring sessions where the student has no respect or inclination to listen to a tutor. 1-on-1 or small group tutoring gives the student the attention that they may be lacking from a classroom environment, so this is the perfect…

To be patient while teaching new topics to students. It may be frustrating if a student cannot grasp the topic well directly, but the tutor should constantly remember that the students learn at very different speeds and that is okay. A tutor should cater to the students' needs, for example, ask the students on the topics they feel the least…

Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is share their passion for the subject. This requires the tutor to be committed to helping the student understand the target subject in a way that is unique to each and every student. I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. I think that my strengths, are…

A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Deepti is working with my daughter for more than a year as her Tutor. The great strength of Deepti is the trust relationship that she develop with the students, so they feel comfortable to open up and get the guidelines she share and teach. My daughter was definitely improved her math, but more important improved her confident and approach to math.

Inside MoorabbinTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ruby focused on multiplying by 2s and 3s as well as tackling multi-step addition problems, including an introduction to doubling larger numbers.

For Year 9, Liam worked through linear equations and revisited square roots and cube roots, practising with expansion using the F.O.I.L. method.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James tackled exponential and logarithm questions along with investigating data distributions in general mathematics, often reviewing homework questions together for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Science, a student's note-taking remained inconsistent—key points were often missed, making revision harder later. "He should from now on write down key areas of each lesson in a science book," one tutor observed.

In Year 11 Maths, test stress led to unfinished questions and errors under time pressure; the student struggled to highlight keywords or pace himself during assessments.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 English student avoided revisiting past feedback, so similar issues recurred in writing tasks.

Across several grades, homework was incomplete or attempted only briefly between sessions, limiting deeper practice and retention when new topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moorabbin recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who used to skip steps and feel stuck on algebra, now writes out each stage when expanding or factorising—he even tackled some problems in his head after practising FOIL.

Another high schooler showed a real shift by teaching back the substitution method for solving equations, something he'd previously struggled to remember without prompting.

Among younger students, one Year 4 girl went from guessing at multiplication to getting all her homework questions right with hardly any help and has started looking ahead at adding fractions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moorabbin Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.
