To me the most important thing a tutor can teach a student is to be confident while applying new knowledge. I am a strong believer that tutors should not only be teachers of knowledge but be mentors to the their students. From my past experience the students I taught, although, picked up new knowledge easily but got scared under pressure. It has…

Empathy is essential for a teacher. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if a student doesn’t understand a topic yet or feels behind academically. Human values like patience and kindness matters more. I try to be patient and creative in my teaching. I understand how fascinating mathematics can be when explained in the right way, which is…

I believe that boosts a student's confidence in the school environment as they are receiving additional help from outside. This allows them to enjoy their time at school and develop positive learning habits. All of these effects will result in better grades for a student, once again fostering more confidence, and cycling back to better grades. I…

1. Give the motivation and belief of actually having the potential to grow and improve. 2. Actually explain the theory to an in-depth level to solve similar problems with different twists. 3. Be relatable and a role-model/mentor figure even outside of academics. As I take the responsibilities of a tutor heavily, I tend to put a high priority…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make him/her fall in love with the subject. They can make the students not only understand the subject but also like it. Likewise, after tutoring students must be to able understand the issue and able to solve problems. I have good communication skills and i have clarity about the…

I believe that a tutor should be prepared to adapt to their students learning style to maximise their understanding. They must also always be up to date with changes in the syllabus and be able to explain the demands of the course. As a recent new HSC graduate, I have substantial experience with the new Advanced English and General Mathematics…

One of he most important things is to introduce and explain a concept to a student using the appropriate teaching style or method that they prefer. Another important thing is to dedicate time and care for a student. For example, explain a concept patiently until the student fully understand. I am a listener. I listen to others needs and help…

The most important thing about tutoring is to ensure the students learn strategies to learn new mathematical concepts, so they can succeed on their own. This is because if a tutor were to consistenly helep a student by giving answers, the tutor is not going to accompany the students into their exams, and so the students may feel lost without the…

The most important thing tutor a tutor can do is to teach students to solve problems independently. The tutor should teach not only how steps to complete the problems but also the logic behind the problems. Thus, students could solve similar or harder questions on their own the next time. One of my strengths is that I know how to adjust the…

A tutor is simply an extension of learning tool from school, when students feel like school's teaching may not be sufficient. A tutor must be able to accurately evaluate the student's level and how strong their understandings are, and design their lessons accordingly. Flexibly tailored lesson plans for students, as it is 1 on 1, are a must for the…

Inside Potts HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Natalia worked on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and tackled past paper problem-solving questions for the OC maths test.

Year 8 student Ryan focused on rates and ratios, applying them to real-world scenarios, and also reviewed how interest rates work using step-by-step calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Lily practised converting decimals to mixed numbers as well as simplifying equivalent fractions, reinforcing these skills with targeted worksheets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 English, one student's essays were "missing key points in the conclusion," and time management issues showed up during exam writing.

In Year 6 maths, a habit of doing working out mentally instead of on paper led to repeated mistakes with fractions and perimeter; as noted, "he needs to write down his working out rather than doing them in his head."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with applying the correct formula when faced with multi-step problems, often guessing or choosing at random if unsure—this meant he missed opportunities to learn from feedback and solidify problem-solving strategies.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Potts Hill recently saw Joel, a Year 10 student, shift from writing run-on sentences to spotting and correcting them on his own—something he'd struggled with before.

Sriyan, also in high school, won his class speech competition after working hard on structure and argument; previously, he'd hesitated to present.

In primary years, Adriana surprised her tutor by quickly picking up how decimals work and now solves complex addition problems in her head without prompting.

At the end of her last session, she completed all her fractions homework accurately and explained each answer aloud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Regents Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birrong Girls High School.
