A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

I see my role as a tutor to guide my students, providing them with the strategies necessary to develop their knowledge and understanding. I think its important to be patient and allow students to build their own understanding with my guidance. I also think that it is important to be a good role model for students. As a student myself, I…

I believe a tutor should always be able to accommodate to the students' circumstances when helping them learn something new. Many tutors are often high-scoring students, while many students will be those struggling. This leads to some tutors not being considerate enough of the students' lack of prior knowledge and understanding. It is the tutor's…

Build a relationship with the student. If you can make the sessions enjoyable then the student will be more likely to engage and try to improve. Patience, lots of students don't understand the concepts straight away and therefore you need to be patient with them to help them achieve their goals. Tutoring help students to get a better grip on the subject. Tutors can give special attention to their students and can solve their doubts and which they don't get clear in the classroom. Students can get in routine to study a subject. I am very patient, if my students cant solve a problem I find out on which step of the solution they are getting…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is listen. There may be other things going on either at home or at school that is preventing students from reaching their academic goals and the best way to foster a student-tutor relationship is to that you're there for them and that you understand what they're going through, in order to…

This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

Engage with them in such a way that the student actually wants to be at tutoring sessions. There is no benefit to tutoring sessions where the student has no respect or inclination to listen to a tutor. 1-on-1 or small group tutoring gives the student the attention that they may be lacking from a classroom environment, so this is the perfect…

Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a tutor is…

I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due to which…

Inside PrahranTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Ava focused on applying the Pythagorean Theorem to word problems and practiced unit conversions for measurement, including using conversion prefixes.

In Year 9, Nicholas worked through negative integers and reviewed fraction concepts, while also tackling algebraic skills like solving single-variable equations and simplifying expressions.

For Year 11, Ben prepared for an upcoming probability test by analyzing tree diagrams and completed exam revision covering parabolas and key syllabus topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes "guessed what to do next" in algebra instead of logically working through each step, which led to avoidable errors when negative numbers appeared.

In a senior session, forgetting to bring completed homework meant valuable time was spent reconstructing past work rather than tackling new challenges.

For a Year 10 trigonometry task, "relying too heavily on formulas" without understanding when or why to use them caused confusion on non-standard problems.

As one tutor noted, "skipping steps made mistakes with + and – harder to catch."

Neatness in written solutions often lagged behind verbal reasoning, especially during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Prahran tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally nail SOH CAH TOA, now manipulating trig equations independently after struggling to set them up on her own.

One high schooler earned full marks on a quiz—word problems included—when last term he hesitated with multi-step solutions and often skipped them altogether.

Another secondary student who used to quietly guess at answers has started speaking up about learning strategies, even offering feedback mid-session.

This week, a younger student completed her entire practice paper before the lesson and came prepared with specific questions she'd written down herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Prahran High School.
