A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Thirdly, a tutor…

Being patient and having an attentive ear so that a student can build confidence in asking questions. Explaining the concepts clearly by adapting to each child's learning style is also important. A good tutor should not only teach students the answers to questions, but also the principles and processes behind the questions. Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

I think the most important steps are, making sure the student has understood, even if you have to re-explain the concept an n number of times or in a multiple different ways, and providing support whenever the student needs it. I hate tutors that charge for help given outside of their class times, or those who specifically arrange for short…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. The most important thing a tutor can do is to support the student throughout their school year as I understand that students during this time can go through a lot of pressure and deal with factors outside of their control. It is our responsibility as tutors to patiently guide the students on the right path and make sure students understand the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. Inside RipponleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Spencer worked on understanding fractions, focusing on the meaning of numerators and denominators and exploring relationships between halves, quarters, and eighths using number lines.

In Year 9, Ollie reviewed his end-of-year maths exam to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, while Frankie concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and building confidence with trigonometry through targeted practice questions.

For Year 11, Alice focused on matrix operations—including transition matrices—and applied financial modelling skills to compound interest scenarios in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student lost marks on SAC extended response questions after "not quite understanding the questions"—they needed to slow down and read each question fully before answering.

Another senior student in Financial Modelling showed stress when working through log graph problems live; practicing under less pressure helped, but anxiety led to avoidance of challenging parts at first.

In Year 8 algebra, a student skipped showing steps—"he switched x and y when substituting points," causing sign errors that were hard to trace.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with place value and often relied on counting instead of recalling number facts, slowing progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ripponlea tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid tricky algebra—now, after working hard on expanding brackets and negative numbers, she's correctly tackling double-bracket problems with less hesitation.

Another high schooler came into sessions wanting more support on trigonometry but recently showed new independence by choosing tasks which simultaneous equations to try without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a student who'd struggled to finish homework now hands it all in early and checks her own spelling errors before showing the tutor her story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Glen Eira Road Campus.
