As someone who grew up in a family that struggled financially, I am constantly looking out for signs that a youngster may be hungry, exhausted, or in need. One sixth-grade student immediately stood out to me when I first started teaching because he was…

Things that are most important a tutor can do for a student is being reliable and patient with students. Whenever a student doesn't understand something and they ask you it is important to not demean them as that will make them think negatively of themselves and become afraid to ask questions in the future. It is good to have an open mind when it…

The tutoring sessions with Dominic are going very well. He has certainly helped Kailiana to gain confidence and skills in maths, while keeping a calm, friendly, and easy-going mood for the tutoring sessions. As any 8 year old does, Kailiana can get distracted from time to time, but Dominic has always taken this in stride, and been very creative in engaging with Kailiana in order to retain her attention. For example, there was one instance where she jumped up out of nowhere and decided to feed her goldfish in the middle of them trying to solve some questions about volume. Once she got back to the table Dominic asked her about her fish, and then changed the objects in the question they were solving to fish. He effectively got her back on track and engaged her attention in a warm and gentle way. Kailiana looks forward to her tutoring sessions, with is another testament to the good work Dominic has been doing with her.

Inside SeftonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alessandro worked on mastering division skills and identifying divisibility by numbers like 2, 3, and 6, using quick tricks for recognition.

For Year 8, Mia focused on algebraic techniques such as expanding and factorising expressions, along with revising the use of indices.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Olivia tackled co-ordinate geometry—finding gradients—and explored congruency in triangles through practical problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, shortcuts in working were common—"he often resorts to doing a lot mentally, and then gets lost in his working"—making it difficult to trace mistakes, especially with algebra and negative numbers.

Homework was frequently incomplete or rushed; when attempted last-minute, this left him "freaking out that he doesn't remember what to do right before the lesson."

For a Year 4 student tackling multi-digit multiplication, confusion arose from misplacing numbers in columns, as one tutor noted he "struggles with the placement of numbers in the equation for 2 by 2 digit multiplication," which led to repeated errors despite knowing the steps.

Recent Achievements

One Sefton tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who's begun catching his own mistakes during algebra and now fixes them independently—previously, he'd wait for hints before correcting errors.

In a recent high school session, another student surprised himself by recalling and confidently applying all four tests to prove triangle congruency, something he found confusing just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a Year 4 student who used to hesitate when faced with multiplication challenges has memorised both the 5 and 10 times tables and now spots number patterns on his own without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Primary School.
