There are 2 jobs of a tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. I have a really deep understanding in all concepts of maths and physics (high school level), and I'm really good at breaking them down into simpler bits. I also know the importance of practicing these…

I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

A tutor's greatest contribution is to give students confidence in their upcoming studies. In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. I have sufficient experience in counseling teenagers, I am good at communicating…

I believe that creating a safe space where the child is comfortable enough to ask as many questions as they need is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Patience, admitting if I don't know content (and then researching it for next time), time management skills, the ability to re-explain concepts in different…

In mi opinion, a tutor should take care of the students in terms of ensuring that they understand each one of the concepts and topics explained. He/she should not hesitate in repeating an explanation as many times as necessary if the student doesn't understand any topic. After finishing my bachelor in Aerospace engineering and some international…

A tutor should always be nice, be responsible, and can always encourage students, just like my high school teacher, she is really helpful and helped me get through a tough time and I appreciate her a lot. I am really patient when dealing with students. I love answering questions from them, and I love to see their face exploring things that they…

Most importantly a teacher can create a safe learning environment where the child is not afraid to ask questions. Encouraging them to ask questions will make them more confident and as a teacher its my duty to make them feel like they can trust an rely on me. A tutor I want to make it interesting so that students are more keen to learn and adapt…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

Help him or her to find their own ways to study most efficiently. Give them the tools, which would allow them to be more confident and comfortable in their learning not only at school, but also beyond. I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to start teaching them from the basics. I believe a good foundation is very important for any student to succeed in the long run. Melanie, St Kilda

Inside St KildaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Matthew focused on complex numbers—proving properties using geometric arguments—and also tackled advanced trial paper questions involving polynomials and mathematical induction.

Year 11 student Amisha worked through the quantum mechanical nature of atoms, applying the Rydberg equation to electron transitions, and practised solving problems on electromagnetic induction.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Will developed essay writing skills by planning comparative responses for Tracks and Into the Wild, with particular attention to analysing language use and connecting key themes such as individualism and materialism.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often skipped showing full working in interest and credit card problems, which made it hard to catch repeated calculation errors; as noted, "small details were missed due to the habit of skimming over the question and jumping straight to the formula."

In senior English, incomplete homework and weak communication about missing work became an issue—one week, no prior notice was given that set tasks hadn't been attempted.

Exam responses also suffered from minimal essay planning, leading to answers drifting off-topic.

In Extension Maths, forgetting previous feedback meant similar mistakes kept resurfacing during timed proof questions.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda tutor noticed that Will, a Year 12 English student, has begun to independently spot and explain his own writing errors—something he previously struggled with—and now takes initiative to backcheck his essays before submitting.

In another recent high school session, Amisha made a breakthrough in physics by correctly solving a projectile motion problem using methods she'd found confusing just weeks ago, and her improved test score reflected the shift.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new engagement by describing themes for class novels out loud after previously being hesitant to share ideas during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College.
