Clear concepts. Once your concepts are clear you can do any kind of question, sometimes even harder questions. Every concept especially in economics and maths have diagrams, I love working with diagrams and I think those are the best things tutors can do for a student. I think I give good real life examples and good diagrams to make concepts…

A tutor should be empathetic and helpful. A tutor can provide personalized guidance, clarify doubts, and offer additional explanations beyond the classroom. Their strengths should include expertise in the subject, effective communication, adaptability to students' learning styles, patience, and the ability to motivate and build confidence in…

A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them the enjoyment from studying. A good tutor will be able to make the student feel that, studying is similar to any other activities, and that they can enjoy it while gaining new knowledge without a hassle. With enjoyment from studying, these students will gain…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. In my approach- I want to guide them by building their confidence and helping them step by step through all weaker areas of their academics. I think I am patient…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. It is important for them to engage in active learning rather than just listening to a teacher speak passively. I find that I can relate to students on a personal level and connect with them through pop culture and references, strengthening…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence as a learner. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students overcome their fear of the unknown and replace it with curiosity. Many students feel lost or unsure at times, and it's important to reassure them that this is a natural part of learning and an opportunity for growth. Having experienced these feelings myself, I understand…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. Inside St Kilda EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anthony practised decimals, focusing on tenths and hundredths using visual models.

Year 9 student Ollie reviewed key skills from his end-of-year maths exam, including univariate statistics (like histograms and median) and perimeter/area of composite shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Leo worked through time series analysis and revised his recent test on regression analysis and data transformation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was observed repeatedly skipping written steps in algebra, saying "I can do this in my head"—but sign errors kept creeping in and took extra time to fix.

In VCE Maths, another student relied heavily on their calculator for financial questions but struggled when context required combining calculator results with written reasoning.

One Year 2 learner avoided learning single-digit addition facts, instead counting each time; as a tutor noted, "she uses counting to avoid knowing them." This led to slower progress and made more complex problems feel overwhelming when automatic recall would have helped.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda East tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask questions, began coming to sessions prepared with her own list—now steering discussions towards what she finds tricky in maths.

In a recent high school session, another student who previously guessed at answers started openly seeking clarification on the difference between functions and relations, leading to genuine understanding.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once struggled to focus managed to factorise numbers independently for the first time and finished all practice problems without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeshivah College.
