Great understanding and knowledge of the subject is possibly the best thing a tutor can offer. Making them able to do their current assignment is just not ideal, they should then also be able to understand the core knowledge of the questions, so that when similar questions arrived they would be able to do it themselves, or even better, they might…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the learning process fun, because at the end of the day, if the student isn't enjoying what they are doing(whether it be succeeding or seeing improvement), they aren't going to remember anything. The learning process has to be a clear pathway, with no maybes, and a fun, enjoyable time. I believe…

If a tutor develops a sense of trust and belief of a student so the student can ask anything, even a thousand times without hesitating is the most important thing. That bond can make learning better and more fun as well. I teach by getting to the intellectual level of the student. It takes a little time to understand the student and how they…

Make a connection so the student wants to study. Inside WelshpoolTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student worked on lowest and highest common numbers, as well as long division using practice questions; another Year 8 focused on order of operations, adding fractions, and converting fractions into percentages with step-by-step examples.

A Year 10 student tackled advanced trigonometric identities from Modules 9E to 9H, deepening understanding through targeted proofs and problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on vectors and trigonometric identities missed key lessons due to illness, so recent sessions focused on catching up quickly—this led to some confusion when tackling proofs and challenge questions. As noted, "she can get stuck on proving equations and hashing the wordings of the problem," showing that gaps in prior learning still slow progress even after review.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with test tasks because she rushed through questions and avoided writing out her working—errors crept in unnoticed until marking time.

In primary, incomplete homework left one Year 5 unable to recall times tables without finger counting.

Recent Achievements

Anele, a high school student aiming to boost OLNA scores, has started turning complex word problems into equations much faster than before—something he used to hesitate with.

Seren now comes to sessions prepared with her own list of trigonometric identities and independently solves advanced problems she once needed help on.

In a recent primary session, one student who was previously unsure about what "add" meant can now confidently add two- and three-digit numbers after using visual strategies, finishing the lesson by explaining her working out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cannington Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Queens Park Primary School.
