The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is to make them more passionate and confident about their learning, as this will transition well past the tutoring period and into their future academics. Additionally, a tutor should help the student build good study habits that they can maintain independently. I'm very patient with people,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach in a way that the student finds comfortable and easy to understand. I have a flexible way of thinking and have a high understanding of the subjects I have studied. This provides me the flexibility to teach the material in multiple ways, so that each student can have a personalized…

Students need to be guided in their thought process - the way they better understand. As a tutor my strngths are : 1) I can present various ways of problem solving, that suit their ability. 2) I am very…

A tutor should be able to consider the wants and needs of the student, as well as keeping a steadily growing pace in terms of learning content. If a student is lacking in a specific area, the tutor should be able to recognise that and determine or formulate content plans to help mitigate that. I believe any and every student should learn and…

The two biggest things I think a tutor can do for a student is to inspire and support. If a student is inspired, there's half the tutor's job gone. A student who wants to learn is far more likely to succeed than one who does not. But in saying this, this is clearly not easy for some students. A tutor also needs to support a student through…

A tutor should be more than someone who lectures and instead be someone who brings value through listening and understanding challenges and working through them with the student to find solutions. Since students most commonly get tutoring as they do not understand the approach taken by their teacher to the subject, I believe the most important thing is to relate to the student, and see the problem from their perspective. This leads to the ability to create personalised approaches to the theories presented in class, and allow the student to…

A good tutor will be able to make a connection with their student, and can understand their individual needs as a learner. I think that if a tutor isn't able to do this, then any knowledge they possess can't be effectively taught. I think a good tutor should also have a strong grasp over whatever they teach, and being able to teach is the biggest…

I think the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help that student find their subject more enjoyable. When a person finds something enjoyable, they are so much more likely to put in the time and effort and excel at it. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. My principle strength as a tutor would be my understanding of how mathematical concepts work, which helps me to explain them. I do this often with my colleagues during…

Rebecca, Yeronga

Inside YerongaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ella worked on multiplication fluency (3x, 4x, and 6x tables) through timed races and Mathletics activities, and tackled money concepts by solving problems involving coins, notes, and everyday transactions.

In Year 8, Alex focused on operations with negative integers—practising addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and identified coefficients while simplifying algebraic expressions using practice questions from school.

For Year 10, Lucy addressed trigonometry fundamentals alongside Pythagoras' theorem applications in triangles, working through problem sets to strengthen understanding of both topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly arrived without her school book or resources, making it difficult to review classwork and target gaps—one tutor observed, "she didn't bring her workbook again, so I couldn't check what she's learning." This lack of preparation led to confusion during assignments and missed opportunities for feedback.

In Year 4 maths, a student often rushed through times tables, resulting in messy working and frequent mistakes; the urge to finish quickly made it harder for her to spot errors.

When a Year 8 learner scored poorly on a practice test, she delayed sharing this and declined extra support—leaving critical issues unaddressed as her exam approached.

Recent Achievements

One Yeronga tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to avoid asking for help now actively seeking clarification when stuck, especially in geometry tasks—she even started preparing questions ahead of time.

A high schooler who'd struggled with algebraic equations began talking through her process aloud and writing out each step, making fewer errors as she worked.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has shifted from guessing at spelling to carefully sounding out new words and correcting herself, leading to more accurate writing.

Last session, she finished her times tables without needing prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeronga State School.
