The most important things a tutor can do for a student having the ability to take pressure off the students. Having only graduated from school last year, going to tutoring for the subjects I had trouble in, took some of the pressures of Year 12 off of my shoulders as I had the reassurance that I could go to my tutors with concepts I had trouble…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

A tutor must be a friend and a tutor at the same time.So that, the students can ask their doubts without any inhibition. At the same time, a tutor should understand the weak points of a student and help them in tackling that. I can make learning smarter and not harder. Also,I can making learning a simple process and an enjoyable…

In my point of view, the main issue is that the student do not understand about their own problems. As a tutor, I must illustrate them what they are lagging in, and should gradually remove the knowledge or skill gap. A tutor should be a friendly person whom a student can communicate his problems. students usually copy the tutor styles to solve…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

Emmanuel Arandiga, Applecross

Inside ApplecrossTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack practised calculating area, length, and perimeter of shapes and worked through times tables for improved recall.

In Year 8, Ava explored linear equations before starting an investigation on parabolas, then compared pie charts with introductory algebra to build confidence in interpreting data.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student reviewed test material covering measurements and percentages alongside calculations with equations and matrices, focusing on efficient problem-solving methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on matrices and data interpretation left several homework tasks incomplete, as noted: "didn't do homework," which meant less opportunity to clarify errors with mean, mode, and median.

In Year 8 algebra, test planning issues led to only 42% on a problem-solving assessment—time was spent re-checking calculations instead of moving forward.

A Year 4 student preparing for word problems often avoided writing out workings for subtraction and multiplication, erasing repeatedly when answers felt imperfect. In the moment, this made reviewing strategies difficult and slowed overall progress during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Applecross tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to guess on statistics questions now carefully checks for the right graph—she can clearly explain when to use histograms versus box-and-whisker plots, which was a real sticking point before.

A Year 9 boy, after weeks of confusing mode and median, started pausing to double-check which measure fits each question, instead of rushing ahead and mixing them up.

In a younger session, a Year 4 girl who once hesitated with multi-digit addition solved two- and three-digit word problems independently and asked for more challenging sums at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Benedict's School.
