I think the most important thing a tutor can do is create a close enough relationship with the student so that the student believes they can trust the tutor and not be scared to ask questions, thus maximising the help they can recieve. I think my strength as a tutor is that I was able to get my high grades in high-school through diligence and hard…

Helping students understand that they are capable of overcoming their difficulties with the subject. Helping them to identify what they need to improve in order to perform better. Teaching them that their efforts are worth it and that they can achieve their goals if they work hard. Many students give up before trying, so I think this is the first…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there to support them in their wins and losses. They need to be available to answer their questions, no matter how silly. My strengths lie in my method of explaining things. Even though its a very minor thing, I've found in my own teachers that even if they are the best in the world, if they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to assess the learning pacing and style of a student beacuse in that way you can strategize the appropriate teaching styles that fits the student. Identifying the students' weaknesses is the most important. If you don't know their weaknesses, it would be difficult to target a specific area, which consequently makes the students unable to improve. The main purpose of a tutor is to expand the tutee's tree of knowledge in a holistic manner. There is no point simply explaining the knowledge behind 1 leaf if it has nothing to hold on to, ie. the trunk and branches. If the leaf has nothing to hold on to then it will fall. So the tutors job is to find the best and most empathetic way from their…

It is important to be cognisant that whilst clear explanation of theory is important to learning, an even more vital constituent element is allowing the student to develop their own intuition and understanding of a topic which can only happen through their own thoughtful practice. Inside AspleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Izzy explored the Pythagoras Theorem out of interest, working through practical examples and problem-solving questions.

In Year 9, James focused on expanding binomials and factorisation as well as measures of centre and spread in statistics, reinforcing these concepts with targeted practice.

For Year 10, Ella revised financial maths topics like simple interest calculations alongside work on algebraic expansion and factorising expressions, using a mix of textbook exercises and exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 8 session, one student left essential maths materials at school due to a swimming carnival, which meant exam revision and formula review couldn't proceed as planned.

In Year 10 algebra work, another student didn't fully check quiz results or complete the follow-up homework ("didn't fully look through quiz results - will do that next time"), leaving gaps in feedback use.

Meanwhile, in a senior trigonometry lesson, calculator steps were misapplied when switching between finding sides and angles. This led to confusion during practice and missed learning opportunities just before assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Aspley noticed that one Year 11 student, Skyla, who used to hesitate with calculator work and rarely asked questions, came prepared for her session with specific problems from her teacher and confidently sought help when needed.

Another high schooler, Claudia, previously struggled to simplify ratios in quizzes but now identifies multiple steps required and can accurately apply area formulas—even explaining how "area of the base" applies to various shapes.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student, Lila, once unsure about ordering fractions on a number line, now quickly sorts both positive fractions and decimals—she even tackled negative values without prompting last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chermside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspley State School.
