Communicate the fundamentals of the problem at hand and provide insight into what is being solved. In maths especially understanding the question and helping the student to find that understanding is always the first move to make with a student. If they don't understand what's being asked then they won't be able to find the right answer and…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is inspire self-believe and uncover topics that may become a passion for children. From this, tutors should foster a willingness to develop the child's skills and even potentially find a career path or tertiary education option within a specific area. My willingness to listen and respond calmly even in…

The most important thing that a tutor can provide for a student is confidence and motivation. Being a student once myself, I know school life can be very challenging and daunting for students. Thus it is important to yes, provide the student with knowledge on concepts, but on another level building up their confidence in such a way that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them with the tools and confidence to become independent learners. Beyond just imparting knowledge, a tutor should encourage critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a strong sense of self-efficacy in their students. This involves not only explaining concepts but…

A tutor needs to be able to quickly pick up on a students strengths and weaknesses so that they can focus on the correct areas of study. They also need to be able to create an optimal learning environment specialized to that specific student. Importantly a tutor needs to make the learning a fun experience for the student as this is what allows the…

A common misconception within tutoring is the difference between teaching and doing for. The most important thing a tutor can do is broaden and enhance the knowledge of the students in a way they understand. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just explaining the content. First, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable asking questions — even the ones they think are “silly.†When a student feels safe to speak up, real learning starts. We absolutely adore our tutor Saumya and she did a brilliant job with our son. We will be starting tutoring again but most likely next term as Jackson is currently learning pretty basic stuff in maths at the moment. I have also recommended your services to quite a few friends who are looking for tutoring.

Inside BirkdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ava explored factorising algebraic expressions and practised solving linear equations, building confidence through step-by-step examples.

For Year 10, Liam tackled real-world maths by working on a budgeting assignment and strengthening his understanding of ratios and finance problems.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Chloe focused on reading comprehension with follow-up vocabulary tasks and improved her spelling through targeted writing activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student struggled to maintain focus during reading comprehension tasks—"reading was a little tired and she lapsed in concentration at points"—leading to missed details and weaker retention.

In Year 10 Maths, there was an over-reliance on calculator shortcuts instead of showing full working, particularly with ratio problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's writing drafts often lacked clear planning; ideas were present but not structured logically or fleshed out fully before moving to the next task. These process gaps resulted in unfinished arguments or repeated calculation errors that slowed overall progress and dented confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

In one Birkdale tutoring session, a Year 11 student finally applied linear formula content to unfamiliar problems after weeks of hesitating when faced with anything new.

Another high schooler recently tackled ratio and percentage questions at double their previous speed. Last term, they'd freeze up if the wording was tricky, but now plan out each step confidently before starting.

With a Year 3 student, the tutor noticed she's begun sounding out difficult words independently and sequencing her ideas into longer stories. Last month, she'd give up quickly or skip ahead when stuck.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Capalaba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birkdale State School.
