The most important thing by far is engagement. Tutoring is good, although it can only do so much if the students interest is elsewhere. The best thing a chemistry tutor can do is help the student engage more in school as the student will spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% with a tutor so using that 80% to your advantage is the most…

The purpose of a chemistry tutor is to provide a one-on-one learning experience; thus, a tutor should be able to adapt to their student's specific needs. I believe a chemistry tutor is all about being able to be the middle man between teachers and students. They are able to act in a professional manner but also can individually suit the needs of a specific student. In doing this tutors are able to fill in those missing links and hopefully create a sense of confidence in students that they might…

Inside BoolarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Tiffany completed a quick maths assessment to pinpoint areas needing support, including key Year 9 topics and problem-solving.

For Year 11, Lucy revised important trigonometric concepts and then focused on algebraic techniques commonly assessed in senior exams, working through these with summary sheets.

In Year 12, Sam tackled HSC practice questions on simultaneous equations and trigonometry using past exam papers, honing skills with step-by-step solutions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, while revising Normal Distribution problems, struggled to identify "trick" elements and missed subtle shifts in question types—this led to confusion during practice tests.

In Year 9 algebra, one student left working incomplete when rearranging equations; as a tutor noted, "he skipped steps in the algebra, which hid sign errors."

A senior preparing for HSC exams was late submitting required practice work and had not reviewed past mistakes, resulting in repeated misunderstandings with formula-based questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner hesitated to write down workings for multi-step multiplication, slowing problem-solving and leaving gaps in her process.

Recent Achievements

A Boolaroo tutor recently noticed a big step forward with a Year 10 student who, after previously skipping steps and feeling lost in worded problems, now carefully works through each stage and successfully interprets what's being asked.

Another high schooler showed new independence in financial maths—where he once needed help to spot key variables, he now picks them out and solves multi-step questions without prompting.

In a younger session, one Year 3 student managed to get two tricky questions right that he'd missed last time, showing clear progress by tackling the same problems again and getting them correct.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Speers Point Library, milyaba—or at your child's school (with permission), like Boolaroo Public School.
