Create a space of no judgement, there are a lot of questions that students find intimidating to ask in a class environment, so as a tutor, creating a safe space for them to ask those questions is the most important goal to achieve. Not only does this allow for a further understanding of a topic, but also allows the student to be able to enjoy the…

To help a student identify which habits are beneficial and which are not, a tutor should be a great listener and observer. A tutor should relate to a student and demonstrate an understanding of the student. Tutors should be willing to listen and work well with students to achieve their personal goals. Tutors must foster or inspire a strong work ethic within students, motivating them to strive to reach their personal best. Aside from increasing a student's comprehension of particular subjects, tutors should highlight the importance of speaking up and…

Have a lot of patience and not get frustrated. Find a way of explaining or doing something that the child understands. Not giving up. I think it's incredibly important to be patient. People learn at their own paces and for those who struggle more than others, patience can help foster an environment where they feel comfortable expressing a lack of understanding in a concept and allows them to make the most of each tutoring session. It is also important to create lesson plans that…

I think as a tutor one of the most important things we can do for a student is be a pillar of support to guide them and follow them on their learning journey. Instead of talking to students and feeding them information its important to talk WITH students as learning is a 2 way street and both student and teacher need to have input. Learning is…

Helping them to develop their own learning style, or styles, to perform in a variety of circumstances is one of the most critical things a tutor can impart on a student. Inside Collaroy PlateauTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily practised times tables, addition, and subtraction through homework tasks, as well as tackling word problems for improved comprehension.

For Year 9, Ben worked on complex area calculations involving circles and irregular shapes, alongside solving inequalities with step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James focused on linear functions and applying key formulas for lines to consolidate understanding ahead of his assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps when expanding and simplifying led to missed sign errors—one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In senior mathematics, exam nerves caused a student to avoid reviewing working, so mistakes in inverse graph questions were left uncorrected.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's heavy reliance on finger counting for times tables slowed her progress with division and multiplication; switching between coloured pens during working out also distracted from focusing on the maths itself.

For one Year 11 project, online research wasn't clearly translated into presentation format, resulting in incomplete preparation.

Recent Achievements

One Collaroy Plateau tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask questions now actively seeking clarification on complex area problems, even attempting inequalities independently after guidance.

In a recent high school session, another student who often guessed at answers started breaking down algebraic equations step by step, clearly articulating where they'd made mistakes and adjusting their approach without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled with multiplication tables began using card games to practise and was soon splitting tougher multiples into manageable parts—completing her twelve times tables challenge with no hints needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collaroy Plateau Public School.
