The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and create a supportive learning environment where questions and mistakes are welcomed. A tutor should personalise their approach to match the student’s individual learning style, clarify difficult concepts in simple terms, and encourage curiosity and…

Increasing a student's grade or helping them understand a single concept are just some of the things that most people look for in a tutor. While these are undoubtedly worthwhile indicators of a tutor's ability to teach a student, they are often mercurial and temporary once the tutoring stops. I firmly believe that what differentiates a good tutor…

A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I am very patient, it doesn't matter how long it takes for a child to understand a topic, because it is quite normal. I would not mind repeating it over and over. I am also…

My primary goal as a tutor is to empower students with the tools they need to become independent and confident learners. I believe that education is not just about memorizing facts but about developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset. By instilling these qualities in my students, I aim to foster a lifelong…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Listen - be aware of the student's needs and goals. 2. Adapt - be flexible and willing to change things if the need arises. 3. Focus - be structured and strict when the need arises, to keep the student on track with their goals. My strengths would be my enthusiasm for learning,…

I think that the tutor acts as a mentor for the student. In this role, the tutor should encourage the students to think critically in order to find answers to their questions. By providing the means to discover the answers for themselves, the tutor ensures that the student does not merely address the 'what' of the question but is also able to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to really help them get the best out of themselves. I think a really good teacher or tutor will always leave their students with a sense that they should always be trying to get the most out of themselves, whatever level that is, and not cheat themselves by being lazy. I think my…

A tutor should be able to provide necessary learning resources for students, feedback and encouragement. A tutor should also be understanding of each student’s skill level and create a stress-free, yet informative learning session that actually tailors to the specific student’s need. Every student should feel that they have the potential to…

Inside DonvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zac focused on building confidence with reading the time and practising times tables alongside single-digit addition.

For Year 9, Carla tackled challenging coordinate geometry questions from her holiday homework and solved literal equations to prepare for class.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben worked through exam-style questions on solving exponential, quadratic, and linear equations, as well as using the discriminant to determine solution numbers and reviewing differentiation basics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided creating personal notes on cellular respiration and the light-dependent reactions, relying instead on memorisation without deeper processing—Brielle needs to go back and memorise some steps…and create her own notes.

In Year 10 Maths, another student hesitated to continue working through algebraic rearrangement if unsure, stopping mid-problem rather than persisting: She would be going in the right direction but stop because she does not know what the next step is.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly forgot times tables practice homework. These habits led to incomplete revision, loss of momentum, or gaps that reappeared in later tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Donvale tutor noticed a big shift in Phoebe (Year 10), who previously hesitated with index laws—now she tackles complex algebraic expressions using these rules and recently completed a mini informal test on her own, applying old knowledge to new problems.

Carla (Year 11) used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, but after mastering the substitution method, she now moves through related questions independently without needing prompts.

In primary sessions, Scarlett has gone from mixing up place values to confidently identifying numbers and counting money correctly; last week she added up $5 and $10 notes without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Pines School.
