Building a student’s love for learning is the most important part of education. When they truly enjoy what they are learning, they naturally reach their highest potential academically. I’ve seen this hold true for every child I’ve worked with, regardless of where they are on the learning spectrum. My strengths as a tutor include an ability…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is to make them more passionate and confident about their learning, as this will transition well past the tutoring period and into their future academics. Additionally, a tutor should help the student build good study habits that they can maintain independently. I'm very patient with people,…

A good tutor will be able to make a connection with their student, and can understand their individual needs as a learner. I think that if a tutor isn't able to do this, then any knowledge they possess can't be effectively taught. I think a good tutor should also have a strong grasp over whatever they teach, and being able to teach is the biggest…

Similar to my response to the last question, I believe a tutor exists to personalise the teaching experience. What this means is understanding exactly what it is the student that gets the student stuck on a certain topic. It may be the whole topic in general or it may be that one small concept is throwing them off, but the most important thing a…

In my experience, there are two really important things a tutor can provide for a student. While one of the important roles a tutor plays is to help students in their understanding, I believe the most important role is to incentivise and motivate hard work, especially by setting a good example. Tutors can only be with their students for a few hours a week, so the onus is on the student themselves to get the hard work done. The…

Inside Dutton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ruby focused on calculating surface areas of prisms and using the Pythagoras theorem to solve for missing dimensions in measurement problems, working through homework exercises.

For Year 11, Tahlia practised identifying parameters for trigonometric sine and cosine graphs and interpreting these from both equations and graphical representations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Lachlan tackled integration of functions involving general rules for sine and cosine, as well as evaluating trigonometric functions at various angles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student skipped over back-checking algebra steps in index laws—"she almost solved the question perfectly but simply made small algebraic errors," a tutor noted.

In Year 8 mathematics, written work sometimes stayed in the head rather than on paper; this meant diagrams and step-by-step layouts were missed, making geometry problems harder to track and correct.

For a senior chemistry assignment, a student delayed starting until close to the deadline, leading to rushed planning and confusion between improvement sections.

These habits led to extra stress or lost marks that could have been avoided with clearer process routines.

Recent Achievements

A Dutton Park tutor recently noticed a big shift in one Year 11 student, who arrived with her assignment already attempted so she could target specific questions—something she never used to do.

Another high schooler who'd struggled with exam problem-solving was able to finish all her homework problems on her own and even caught minor errors without prompting.

In a younger session, a primary student who used to hesitate now read the next chapter aloud independently for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brisbane South State Secondary College.
