I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them that learning can be enjoyable, and not just a task. I believe that a tutor should take the time to motivate their students to approach learning with a positive perspective, and provide them with the necessary advice when students have doubts or worries about their…

I think the most important thing for a student is being able to connect with them on their wavelength, engaging their interest and focusing on their capabilities as a person rather than using a "one size fits all" approach. I am very passionate and empathetic which helps students who are otherwise struggling. I am also hardworking and have a…

I believe a tutor should help students feel understood, supported, and confident in their abilities. This means paying close attention to their learning needs, explaining concepts clearly, and encouraging effort and progress. When students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes, they develop confidence, independence, and a more positive…

Be prepared for a lesson, be interested, explain things properly and clearly, make sure they actually understand and aren't just saying 'yes', allowing them to work through some tasks themselves. I think I am good at explaining and communicating. I am also quite down to earth, so I think that it is easy to ask me any questions.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them the impression that you are really there to help them. Some of the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student are to boost their self-esteem, adjust to their preferred method of learning, and simplify difficult ideas. In addition to encouraging critical thinking and offering concise explanations, a tutor should foster a safe space where students feel free to make mistakes and ask questions. My…

In my opinion, a tutor should foster a safe and encouraging space for learning, build students’ confidence, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. It’s about empowering students, not just teaching content. In fact, implementing teaching strategies to adapt to the student's learning style is crucial for better comprehension.…

The most valuable asset I have as a tutor is my belief that every student can succeed. Each student should come in knowing that there is someone who believes they can achieve more if they have the right motivation. Teachers have a large impact on shaping students mindset, and wellbeing, which I take to heart for all my students. As a pre-service…

Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. Leading students patiently through the learning process helps instil confidence. I've received multiple feedback from…

I think the biggest thing that a tutor can do is to make the subject interesting for the student so that he/she actually enjoys doing it and does not run away from it. Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the proper tools and techniques to achieve their goals so that eventually they don't need to rely on you to succeed. I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. I see myself as a communicative, friendly,…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is to know what not to do.Never should a tutor discourage any participation or disapprove of the theories initiated by the student. Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Daniel revised index laws and logarithmic functions, focusing on simplifying expressions and using worked examples.

In Year 10, Emily practised sketching curves of quartic and cubic functions as well as reviewing plans for next year's topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jack explored integration by recognition and definite integrals, applying these skills to area under curves with step-by-step guidance.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with interpreting worded questions in maths, often feeling stuck before the process "clicked." As a tutor noted, "she needs a lot of work on interpreting worded questions," leading to hesitation and incomplete answers.

In VCE Maths Methods (Year 11), another student was visibly unconfident despite correct working, pausing with "I don't know" even when on track—this self-doubt slowed progress and led to unnecessary rechecking.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 arithmetic, one child showed reluctance to attempt multiplication problems independently, sometimes saying they "can't be bothered," which meant fewer chances to reinforce number sense during practice.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who, after initially finding bearings problems confusing, now approaches them independently and solves worded simultaneous equations without needing guidance.

In Year 10, another student who used to hesitate with worded questions is now able to break down linear rule problems clearly and even constructs formulas on her own during lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has become much more comfortable with long division; after working through examples together, she now completes similar problems confidently by herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fairfield Primary School.
