Considering, my experience gained at primary and secondary school; and the first term at university- a tutor must have the ability to listen patiently and attentively to students. They must know that the power barrier between them and the student must be leveraged accordingly when the situation arises to either work as an examiner of the student…

Two things: One: Listening and observing. Sometimes in tutoring you focus so much on the schoolwork and learning and bypass the learning experience. Being keen and observing the student\'s behaviour, mode of communication, body language etc, you can meet them at their level and once they feel understood, not looked down on and safe, then they are…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be dedicated and committed to what they are doing. Furthermore, if they find a limitation in their own practise/experience/knowledge, endeavouring and taking out time to fix their gap of knowledge to fulfill the students right. 1) Academics: I graduated High School with an ATAR of 94.6, and…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student is to understand them and see their weakness and strengths and utilise this in their teachings. There is no one blanket method of teaching. My strength as a tutor is that treating each student individually and ensuring to demonstrate the topics in variety of way as each student learns…

Build a space where a student feels comfortable saying "I don't understand", and then receiving their issues with patience and understanding. It's important they feel confident enough to ask questions, and not shamed for having them. Explaining something multiple times and then trying a new way of explanation, exploring new ways of teaching, is a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is to build up their self-esteem, simultaneously to their knowledge and skill. By helping them understand problems, concepts and new topics, students gain confidence in the classroom. In the situation that they aren't understanding, they need support to encourage them to consistently…

It's important is to not show the student everything and complete their work for them. Tutoring is about enabling the student to complete work and content by explaining concepts to them so they understand what the question is asking them and explain to the child what the question is asking and then assisting them where they need to succeed. I…

Ultimately, a tutor is an additional source of help on top of schooling. The reason students look for this external assitance is due to traditional teaching methods being subpar. Schools should ensure that this is never the case, but In reality it is unfortunately so. Hence, the most important thing I can provide for my students is to bridge the…

It is extremely important that a tutor is encouraging and can open their student up to the world of learning, enabling them to find a love of not just the subject, but of studying and bettering themselves. A tutor must show both compassion and enthusiasm, and always go out of their way to ensure each and every student leaves feeling satisfied and…

Inside HurstbridgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Indie worked on polynomials and their differentiation, then reviewed integration techniques for estimating areas under curves.

A Year 9 student focused on interpreting scatterplots and completed the statistics unit with hands-on graphing activities.

For Year 11, Alex tackled applications of integration and differentiation, along with solving simultaneous equations using algebraic methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a calculator for multiplication and division, as noted: "even though the calculator is allowed in class we still need to work on knowing to do it by heart." This led to slower progress when asked to solve without digital support.

In Year 7, one student skipped writing out full steps in basic maths problems—"skips over steps instead of slowly working through them"—which made errors harder to spot and fix.

Meanwhile, a senior student faced setbacks when worded trigonometry questions were left incomplete, with missed practice leading to lower confidence during timed assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Hurstbridge tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to ask questions now coming prepared with her own problem areas, ready to discuss and even tackling complex topics independently once discussion began.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw them finish all assigned homework before the lesson—a first for this student—and confidently apply the average speed formula in unfamiliar ways.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to guess quietly now solves word problems aloud, explaining their thinking and asking for help when stuck instead of staying silent.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hurstbridge Primary School.
