Encourage students to think critically and learn independently. I believe this to be core aspects of teaching which is largely avoided today. A good mentor is one that enables students to solve problems on their own, and supports students in discovering their interests and appreciation for the subject beyond their tutoring session. One of my…

I believe that a chemistry tutor should understand that students have different ways of the studying that actually help them in their studies, and they should be able to adapt and prepare new ways of teaching that is most valuable to students. A tutor should be motivating but disciplinary to students, to ensure they maintain a good mindset towards…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to listen to them, understand their queries, and then make strategies so that they can learn how to solve the problems. Apart from this , a tutor can foster independence in students so that they can be vocal about their issues. The biggest Strength that I have as a tutor is…

pathetic: Understands what it’s like to be a student who may lack confidence, feel stressed, be overwhelmed or just not understand the material. Honest: Don’t hesitate to say that you do not know about a particular concept. Trying to bluff your way through will only hurt the student and your reputation in the long run. Enthusiastic:…

I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim…

A tutor or teacher has to show passion/enthusiasm/excitement for the subject(s) they teach to their students, students learn best in subjects they are interested/excited about, you cannot expect a student to be interested & do well in a subject if even the person teaching them the subject isn't interested in the subject. Enthusiasm and passion…

I think the most important things a chemistry tutor can do are create a supportive learning environment, explain concepts in a way the student understands, and build their confidence. A good tutor helps students develop problem-solving skills, so they don't memorise the type of question, but HOW to do that question, which encourages them to think…

A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a chemistry tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that…

Inside Laverton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 Oscar focused on solving worded quadratic equations and spent time graphing cubic functions.

Year 10 Ava worked through challenging derivatives questions, including the chain rule and product rule, and practiced inverse function problems using past exam material.

For Year 11 Dean, recent lessons involved tackling integration questions in preparation for an upcoming SAC and revising key trigonometry concepts like the unit circle with homework review.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work was often hard to follow—his working out can be very messy and unclear, making it tough to spot errors or review steps, especially with surds and fractions.

In Year 11 Methods, one student would jump into algebraic manipulation without first checking for possible simplifications, resulting in wasted time and confusion mid-solution.

Another Year 12 learner hesitated to attempt complex probability questions involving multiple variables, sometimes giving up early despite being capable of solving them.

When exam wording became tricky in senior maths, a lack of confidence led to missed opportunities on challenging problems.

Recent Achievements

One Laverton North tutor recently noticed Ava, a Year 12 student, no longer relies on the formula sheet for chain and product rules—she's now able to complete derivative calculations faster and from memory, after struggling to recall them before.

Oscar (Year 11) has started catching his own algebra mistakes with indices mid-question, rather than waiting for correction; he's also begun to approach difficult problems by trying new methods independently instead of hesitating.

In middle years, Dean has made a shift from frequent errors in expansion to self-checking his work—he picked up a mistake himself while reviewing solutions last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Martin de Porres School.
