The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, outside of teaching concepts, is to support the student to arrive at the conclusion/answer themselves rather than leading them to it. A tutor must always support and encourage students to think for themselves. I always listen to my students and encourage them to think out loud. This way I can…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. Often I find many people lack personalisation and simply follow the curriculum. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I also find…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is have an interest in the topic themselves. An interested tutor increases the interest of the students meaning the student has more of an incentive to study and invest their time in a subject. Further more an important aspect of a tutoring job is preparation on the side of the tutor, to allow…

Inside Manor LakesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Aiden focused on mastering the chain rule for differentiation and tackled VCAA Exam 1 (2020) questions, with extra attention to finding equations of cubic functions and using the CAS calculator for graphing.

Year 10 Lachlan worked through advanced trigonometric concepts, including right-angled triangle ratios (sin, cos, tan), exploring the unit circle, and an introduction to solving sine and cosine equations with practice test questions.

For Year 8 Xavier, sessions targeted algebraic problem-solving—solving linear equations by substitution and elimination—and also reinforced geometry skills such as calculating surface area and perimeter through step-by-step examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in advanced maths left multiple questions incomplete on graph transformations, often avoiding written working. As one tutor noted, "he relied heavily on his CAS calculator for basic sketches," which made it harder to spot misunderstandings about graph shapes and turning points.

In a Year 11 calculus session, notes were missing dates and lacked key steps from class discussion—meaning revision was less effective later.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student's inconsistent handwriting and skipped spelling corrections meant her ideas were clear when spoken but lost detail in writing, leading to confusion during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Manor Lakes noticed that one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to ask for help, now speaks up whenever unsure about algebraic equations—this shift has made it much easier to address his gaps right away.

In a recent high school session, another student who'd struggled with integrating quotes into essays managed to apply this skill independently while drafting a persuasive response.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who was reluctant to read aloud finished the entire next chapter out loud without prompting and even asked questions about tricky words as she went.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manor Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ngarri Primary School.
