According to me, a chemistry tutor must collaborate with his students to set realistic goals for them in the short as well as long term. Apart from that, a tutor should definitely empower students with effective study methods, time management strategies, and organizational techniques as it encourages them to develop independence in their learning…

Making a student as confident as possible is the upmost important aspect of tutoring in my mind. A tutor needs to listen to a student, to understand what the best methods of learning will be, and needs to adapt their teaching to work for any student, rather than just forcing a student into a single mindset. I explain things very carefully, with multiple ways of looking at something, so I am quite flexible in trying to work with a student. I…

Inside Newcastle EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Grace practised division and multiplication with timed tests, building speed and confidence.

For Year 10, Olivia reviewed shares and dividend yield calculations in Financial Maths before tackling lump sum repayment questions on loans.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan focused on the quadratic formula and methods for completing the square, working through exam-style problems to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student relied heavily on formulas in financial maths, often "putting numbers in to get an answer" without understanding the context, which led to confusion when unfamiliar question types appeared.

In Year 9, another student's working out was disorganised and sometimes rushed—her tutor noted, "she rushes the questions a little bit and needs to slow down."

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner lost confidence during challenging practice tests and skipped complex-looking algebra problems entirely. This avoidance left gaps in understanding that surfaced when she tried multi-step exam questions under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Newcastle East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Danika, start identifying and asking about specific algebra questions she struggled with—something she hesitated to do earlier in the year.

A high school student, Liz, recently worked through HSC-level financial maths problems and was confident enough to explain her answers and even discuss alternative solutions with her tutor, showing much more initiative than before.

Meanwhile, Lara (Year 7) has begun tackling challenging topics like linear equations by applying new study techniques; last week, she completed a question independently for the first time after previously needing step-by-step support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stockton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newcastle Grammar Bolton Street Campus.
