Empathy. All of us have been a tutee at least once in our life. Our teachers, mentors, professors, guru, whatever you call it, gave us this for us to learn on the best possible way we can. Patience and compassion. Learning can be tough, especially to those having a hard time understanding it. Having patience is one of the strengths tutors need to…

Ideally, I want to instill the same sense of wonder and love that I have for mathematics in the students. This won't work for all students, of course, so failing that I think a tutor should be able to teach a student how to think for themselves - it's one thing to be shown how to get an answer, and it's another thing entirely to be taught how to…

I truly think empowering a student to ask questions is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. The confidence to ask questions leads to a student's ability to think for themselves. This combination is what allows maximum progress. Tutors can instill confidence in students, which is very important. Students already have so many things to stress about, by giving them some confidence and reassurance in their school work you can help them feel better. Tutors should provide a safe space where students feel comfortable in sharing their concerns. As a tutor you should prioritize…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help the student learn in a way that works for them. Usually in a classroom, due to the overwhelming number of students, teachers aren't always able to help students individually. Therefore, sometimes a student that is struggling is only struggling because they learn better with a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give the student more confidence in themselves and their learning. There is only so much you can teach someone if they give up on themselves, so the most important thing is ensuring that confidence. I also believe that it's important to have good communication so that the student feels that they can ask…

Inside North LakesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sarah focused on long multiplication and addition and subtraction of fractions, practising with real-world examples.

In Year 10, Michael worked through expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions and began learning about the binomial theorem using Pascal's Triangle.

For Year 11, Josh tackled solving trigonometric equations and explored transformations of trigonometric functions by sketching graphs to visualise their effects.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, a student often knew the steps for algebra or quadratics but struggled to identify which method matched each question type. As one tutor noted, "she knows what to do but doesn't know when to do it"—this meant difficulty applying concepts during graph sketching tasks.

For tech-free exam sections in Year 11, over-reliance on calculators left gaps in basic arithmetic and algebra fluency; mistakes crept in when working by hand.

In Year 4, another student's written work lacked clear layout, so positives and negatives were mixed up during longer calculations—leading to avoidable confusion mid-problem.

Recent Achievements

A North Lakes tutor noticed that Peyton, a Year 11 student, has started to take much more initiative—she now actively takes notes during sessions and isn't afraid to pause the lesson to ask questions about any doubts, which is a real shift from her earlier quietness.

In another session, Lochlan (Year 10) was able to pinpoint specific maths problems he was stuck on instead of waiting for prompts, showing new independence in tackling challenges.

Meanwhile, Callum in Year 4 moved from only knowing half his six times tables to confidently recalling them all and even answering related division questions without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Lakes College.
