Understand what their problem is and where they are struggling is truly important as it can provide the fundamentals of teaching a certain topic or skill for the student to learn. Adapting to students knowledge and way they learn is also important as a student could be a practical learner with real life examples or a theoretical learner,…

Tutoring is a similar thing to parenting. A tutor must cater to his/her student like a child of their own. So, the main thing a tutor can show towards a student is compassion. Next, the right attitude must be shown towards the students. Making them understand the concepts, even if it takes multiple times should be tolerated as the ultimate goal is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. In my experience, the language used during tutoring sessions plays a crucial role in shaping a student’s perception of their abilities and can significantly impact their performance in the subject. Often, students who seek additional help are incredibly bright…

I think empathy is the most important thing, as someone who is currently teaching kids and who has done tutoring since a very young age, I have firsthand experience in knowing that when a tutor is empathetic and kind towards the student, the student is more likely to be open towards growth and learning. Mindset is key in any learning environment…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to take the time to understand who the student is. not every student learns the same way and the only way to effectively help someone is to take the time to know them first. As a tutor, i always take the time to get to know my student first so i can develop a connection with them and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is guide the student through the academic journey. Moreover, beyond academics a tutor can be a beacon of support nurturing their confidence even when they doubt themselves . Last but not the least, it is about preparing your students to become the best versions of themselves. I can really bond with students…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to have patience, be willing to take feedback as a tutor, and put the most effort in helping a child get most out of their learning. Often when working with kids of a young age, they can get frustrated quickly if they don't understand something, so it is important to be able to quickly calm…

Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

The ultimate intention of tutoring, I believe, is to guide students to the point at which they can become independent learners and like tutors, teach other students. Therefore, the most important things a tutor can do to help the student reach this goal is personalise the learning and teach to the student's strengths, meanwhile minimising their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is figure out their learning method, whether that be through visuals, making the learning content into a story or explaining the concept to themselves. That would enable the tutor to teach in a way that the student understands and can remember the content taught. Furthermore, building a…

I strongly feel that it is the responsibility of the tutor to make his/her student confident about what he/she knows, rather than making them learn answers by rote. It is the duty of the tutor to support, motivate, and explain things to his/her student. The tutor should also be able to find out the weaknesses of his/her student. Strengths of…

Inside OfficerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia worked on finding the area and perimeter of square and triangle shapes as well as practicing persuasive writing.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on algebraic fractions and revising index laws to strengthen his understanding of algebra topics.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia completed a chemistry assessment involving chemical reactions and practiced mathematics probability questions using real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 10 English session, the student's writing showed frequent grammar and spelling errors, yet he rarely proofread—even when mistakes were highlighted by Microsoft Word.

"He seems comfortable just passing and not striving to achieve his best," a tutor noted after reviewing an assignment.

In Year 9 Mathematics, answers were often unchecked, with simple calculation slips (like 12 Ă— 6) overlooked due to skipping review steps.

In both Years 7 and VCE-level sessions, uncharged iPads repeatedly delayed lessons by up to fifteen minutes while he searched for a working device. This left less time for targeted learning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Officer noticed one Year 11 student now independently double-checks his maths work, catching errors on his own—previously he'd submit answers without reviewing.

Another high schooler who used to hesitate with assignments has started structuring essays solo and comes up with her own arguments, showing real initiative compared to earlier sessions where she waited for prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once guessed at tricky words is now sounding them out carefully and reads whole pages aloud without needing picture cues. Last week, she finished reading a chapter unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cardinia Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Officer Primary School.
