The most important thing you can do for a student is usually to inspire them, as this is the number one key to success and personal growth for them in a subject, in my opinion. Allowing students to appreciate beauty and simplicity links the value of the topics to their work in it. Of course, some students are already very passionate so for them…

I believe that a good teacher will prioritise the mindset of their student(s) before attempting to actually teach them anything. To enter the flow state prior to gaining knowledge is, in my view, of utmost importance. A tutor should find a way to ensure that their student is enjoying the learning experience. One example is, rather than explaining…

There are various skills and attitudes that a physics tutor should have inorder for the student to enjoy and learn during lesson time. Being able to build rapport was one of the skills that a tutor should have its a way for the student to be comfortable. Moreover, being attentive to the student is a way of making the lesson flow smoothly. For…

The most important thing that a physics tutor can do for a student is to engage the student in a way which makes them want to keep learning that specific subject if not fall in love with it. At the end of the day motivation must come from the student themself and as a tutor I believe it is my job to help the student find that motivation. I believe…

Tahlia and Jonah are getting along very well so far and Tahlia appears to be taking on board the information that Jonah is giving her. Tahlia is enjoying her tutoring sessions and it doesn't feel like an hour to her.

Inside OonoonbaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student worked on quadratic equations, tackling more challenging problems and using practice questions for mastery.

In Year 11 Chemistry, Isaac focused on ionic and covalent bonds, identifying interaction types and writing chemical formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student revised binomial theorem topics including Pascal's triangle and binomial expansion through textbook exercises in preparation for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

Several students in Years 7–12 have shown a pattern of not completing assigned homework, with missed tasks impacting their ability to consolidate skills—one tutor noted, "Sophia could not finish her assigned Homework again," after repeated reminders.

In Year 10 science, forgetting to bring the correct assessment version meant critical feedback was delayed and "he could not locate the most updated version of the assessment which was a vital part of the discussion."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 maths student struggled to explain reasoning behind answers; when asked why cos 55° > cos 65°, she hesitated rather than justifying her steps. This led to lost opportunities for deeper understanding during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Oonoonba tutor recently saw a big change in Jacinta, a high school student who used to wait for feedback before making edits—she arrived this week with her essay already revised independently based on both her teacher's and tutor's comments.

Another secondary student, Eve, who often second-guessed her approach to new maths topics, has started tackling index laws questions independently and solved most problems during the session.

For a younger learner, Sophia showed a clear shift from relying on prompts for division work to confidently completing all assigned problems by herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Citylibraries Flinders Street—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oonoonba State School.
