The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them and to listen to them. A tutors job is to guid a student in the right redirection. A tutor can tailor the their teaching to the students needs so they are both working together. The tutor must be an excellent listener to understand how the student thinks and what they need…

There are three things that I would consider to be the most important would be building confidence, providing clarity but also foster independent learning. Firstly, many students struggle, not because they lack ability but because doubt themselves, thus by acknowledging progress no matter how small will help students believe in their own…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is provide an opportunity for the student to thrive. To establish belief in them, as typically students seek out tutoring as they believe they are not 'good' at a subject. Being the one person there that cheers them on is a powerful thing. Providing alternate methods for students to learn is…

In my opinion it is extremely important to ensure the learner knows that it is safe to not succeed at first as learning is a process full of unsuccessful attempts. This will allow students to participate fearlessly in a tutoring session. I think that a tutor can be successful if he can improve the base of a subject for the children and instead of just making them learn concepts, if the tutor can make it understandable and interesting that should be the most important thing. Danielle, Rochedale South

Inside Rochedale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice practised adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Jack focused on algebraic skills including simplifying, factorising, and performing operations on expressions in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled financial maths by working through problems involving simple interest calculations and using real-life scenarios such as credit card purchases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often left reports unfinished or with unclear structure; "report needs to be written up in a proper structure," one tutor noted.

In Year 8, another arrived unprepared—without a notebook or working calculator—which slowed the start of geometry lessons.

A Year 10 learner frequently practised only familiar textbook questions at home, missing out on harder problem-solving types and leaving gaps when tackling quadratic equations by completing the square.

One primary student hesitated to show working for surface area problems, sometimes erasing mistakes rather than correcting them—making it difficult to track their thinking mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Rochedale South tutor noted that a Year 11 student, who previously relied on memorising steps for equations, learned to set up and solve problems independently using proper methods—a real shift in approach.

Another high school student not only completed all revision materials but also corrected common mistakes in compound interest, showing greater care and accuracy than before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who often lost focus managed to stay engaged throughout the session and eagerly used props to understand 3D shapes in 2D drawings. The lesson finished with her confidently explaining how she solved the worksheet questions out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan North Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Primary School.
