As an english tutor, our goal is not only for our students to pass the subject, we also want our students to reach their full potential. We can do so by giving our students our support, and giving them time to digest what they have learnt from the lesson. We can let them know that it is normal to struggle at first especially if it is a new topic…

Build the confidence of the student.Whether it be in asking a question from me or confidently answering a quesyion on a paper. Also making the student see the beauty of what they are learning is important. Learning not just for the sake of a grade but learning to understand the beauty behind concepts . I am very patient and understanding, which…

Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

First things is to make them feel comfortable so that they can so their doubts. Next, understand the prior knowledge of a student and then give examples on the problems based on that. It helps them to understand various concepts easily and they start building interest in studies. Lastly, try to make education interesting for them! My main…

The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. By the time I have finished a term (or 2) with my student's, they are more confident, more intuitive and approach their work with excitement. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

I believe an english tutor should be able to explain things clearly and stop the flow of teaching when necessary if a student needs to revise a difficult concept, as I believe it is better to know the concepts now rather than leave those areas to remain unclarified and which can and does affect students come a test or exam day. I believe that a…

I think an english tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. I think tutors need to teach their students the importance of practice and resilience, especially in VCE. English is a subject which takes lots of practice and…

The most important and valuable thing an english tutor could ever do for a student is instil a love for a subject into the child. It is important to make the student feel valued, and as a educator be open to adapting learning and teaching pedagogies to inclusively meet each individual students needs as best as possible. I have a passion and love…

Develop a good rapport with the student so they are open to expressing their fears/weaknesses. Where the student does not open us, assess exactly which area the student needs help in and focus their energy there. I think giving a student a sense of confidence in their own abilities is very important as an english tutor; ultimately, every student has some limitations, but to push those boundaries a little forward, a student must find the inner confidence to try a little harder, as opposed to accepting their present ability as final. As a tutor, showing a…

I believe that an english tutor is not there to chastise and 'drill' concepts into a student's mind. The best thing that a tutor can do for their student is to create a positive, uplifting and supportive learning environment. This ensures that students feel comfortable to learn and improve so that they can approach their mistakes not with…

As I have noticed with most of my tutors, they usually teach me by making me remember a methodology systematically, thus when there is a slight variation in the question it would stump me. Needless to say, students, especially those in their teenage years tend to struggle with their hormones and volatile emotions. The best a tutor can do is to never give up on a student and be understanding of their situation. Once that trust is built, it creates a healthier and more productive space for learning. In my opinion, a great teacher,…

Inside RockbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sienna focused on foundational algebra skills and reviewed key mistakes from a recent pre-lesson test, while Year 8 student Daisy concentrated on revising indices in preparation for an upcoming maths assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jennifer worked through past SAC papers and tackled financial maths concepts to reinforce understanding ahead of her school's assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student hesitated to attempt basic algebra questions during a quiz; as the tutor noted, "there were quite a few questions that Zoe was hesitant to approach and answer," which slowed her progress on familiar content.

Meanwhile, in VCE Business Management, Jennifer's SAC preparation revealed she struggled to integrate specific case study examples into extended responses, leading to answers that felt general rather than targeted.

A Year 5 learner sometimes attempted answers without working them out fully on paper, especially with large numbers in measurement problems—this meant calculation errors went unnoticed until review time.

Recent Achievements

One Rockbank tutor noticed a big shift in Jennifer's approach to VCE Business: after initially struggling with linking theory to case studies, she now writes answers using real examples and integrates ideas from high-scoring responses.

In Year 10 maths, Micah had trouble with completing the square but, after focused practice, can now tackle these questions independently without needing each step explained.

Meanwhile, Daisy—who used to wait quietly when confused—has started asking clarifying questions during lessons and suggests her own ways to solve problems before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caroline Springs Library & Learning Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rockbank Primary School.
