I personally believe that for an english tutor to be effective, they have to be willing to listen to, and learn from, the individual that they are working with. There is always more than one way to teach a specific skill, and, as a result of this, it is important to work together to find the most effective methods. I think that it is important to…

Inside WhitfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Will practised multiplication of fractions and worked through area and perimeter questions as part of test preparation.

In Year 9, Layla focused on calculating wages, understanding profit and loss, and applying simple interest formulas, often linking these concepts to real-life scenarios.

For a Year 10 student, recent sessions included working through the application of Pythagoras' theorem in triangles as well as targeted revision for upcoming exams using past paper problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student arrived without necessary materials, causing time to be lost redoing a missed homework sheet instead of building new skills.

In a senior maths session, one student did not complete the assigned homework for several weeks; this pattern meant gaps in understanding BODMAS and percentages persisted, with mistakes repeating in later questions.

"She still needs more practice with factorising equations as she is making mistakes with signs," observed the tutor after reviewing incomplete work.

In Year 6, unclear note-taking made recalling formulas for area versus perimeter difficult—leading to confusion during revision and delays tackling unfamiliar shapes.

Recent Achievements

A Whitfield tutor noticed a real shift with Layla, a high school student who initially needed step-by-step prompts but is now working through complex questions independently and making targeted corrections after feedback.

In another session, Eve—also in high school—was able to identify where she went wrong on her test after reviewing exercises together, showing new self-awareness and the ability to fix her mistakes on her own.

Meanwhile, Sophia (Year 5) has started bringing her own questions from home and solved division problems without extra help for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manunda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Whitfield State School.
