I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

The most important role of a tutor is to foster both understanding and confidence. That means not only explaining content clearly but also encouraging curiosity, building trust, and providing strategies for independent learning. A tutor should adapt to each student's pace, listen actively, and create a supportive environment where mistakes are…

A tutor must help a student reach their greatest potential. A tutor must understand their student's skillful areas and utilize them to the best of their abilities. A tutor must understand their student's strengths and weaknesses and tailor the lessons around the weaknesses. I am very good at communication and treat my students as friends. I make…

It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

I feel the most important thing that a tutor can do is to listen to the students as they explain what they don't understand and to help fully explain the solution of the problem to the student and to verify that the students understands the new concepts. I am patient with the students and I can work through many examples with the student until he…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

I strive to help students see their studies not as a burden but as an opportunity to gain knowledge and broaden their horizons. By fostering a…

I think the important thing for a tutor is to be clear in their concepts so that they can explain and teach their student in a clear and understanding way. As a tutor you need to make sure you test the student so that you know where they stand and then start from there. Evaluating the progress is just as essential. I consider myself a well…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

To be flexible. Every one of us is a one-of-a-kind human being. This fact is so important that as a tutor, being flexible in the teaching approach will help the students grow in their own way without being forced to follow others' approaches. I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. Inside AberfeldieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah worked on factorising and expanding algebraic expressions, including an introduction to the "Magic X method" for quadratics.

For Year 8, Jack focused on trigonometric ratios—using diagrams to connect sine, cosine, and tangent with right-angled triangles—and revised graphing lines by finding gradients and axis intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily practised scientific notation alongside significant figures and applied exponent laws in problem-solving contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left algebraic fractions homework incomplete, meaning skills didn't progress between sessions.

In Year 10, one learner avoided writing out steps when rearranging equations, as the tutor noted: "She only used her calculator and couldn't replicate the method afterwards."

A Year 7 struggled with messy working—numbers and steps ran together on the page, which made checking for mistakes much harder.

Meanwhile, a senior student lost motivation after struggling with vocabulary in essay writing; frustration grew each time sentences were marked incorrect, leading to slower improvement in both confidence and output.

Recent Achievements

One Aberfeldie tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after struggling with mistakes on matrix assignments, he recently completed his work without errors and started presenting his solutions clearly for exams.

In a Year 8 English session, Sam—who used to be hesitant sharing ideas—spoke up more than usual and received positive feedback from his teacher on his essay.

Meanwhile, Julia in Year 5 has begun taking her own notes during lessons rather than waiting for prompts, showing new independence she didn't have at the start of term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aberfeldie Primary School.
