Most important thing is to be patient and a good listener. I feel it's important to connect with each student and teach them ways how to learn. A tutor also must be honest and confident. I am a clear and effective Communicator. My past studies have given me advance maths and English skills (even though my native language is not English). I have…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make students enjoy the subject if not they will not be able to grasp the concepts well enough. Ensuring communication is sound and fixing student doubts then and there so they don't persist is how one can nurture enjoyment in a student. Also making sure the class isn't frigid and…

I think the most important steps are, making sure the student has understood, even if you have to re-explain the concept an n number of times or in a multiple different ways, and providing support whenever the student needs it. I hate tutors that charge for help given outside of their class times, or those who specifically arrange for short…

Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging. Sometimes, things don't click for people right away, and it's important to understand that what most students need is just for someone to believe in them. I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. Moreover, fostering a positive and supportive relationship built on trust and mutual respect is…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
