I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is make the student feel supported and understood. Ceating a space where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes is important. A good tutor should listen and adapt their approach based on the student’s needs. Sometimes students already have the ability but they just need…

Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a chemistry tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize…

I believe that it is paramount for a chemistry tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each…

Second, a tutor should always give encouragement to the students so they are always positive when facing difficulties. In my opinion, I think my strength is I am patient. My strengths are good communication skills, flexibility, patience, understanding the students' problems, and guide them accordingly. Other strengths would include being more…

As a chemistry tutor, the most important thing I can do for a student is to be available whenever they need me. In the past, students have had questions 1 hour before their exams. They have my number so they can contact me as needed and I will reply ASAP to explain what they are struggling with. To be a tutor is to be a source of knowledge that…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. Patience is important for many reasons in tutoring.…

Most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is making them feel that their all queries are valid and making them ask more and more questions without hesitation. Also patiently answering thier queries is most important. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

The best tutors and educators remember the importance of being lifelong learners. A tutor must teach to the student's strengths and minimize the student's weaknesses. Tutors…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
