The most important things that we can do for student is helping them to overcome the topics/subjects that they find hard to understand which eventually they lose passion of that subject. Hence, it is very important for us to assist the students and being patient is very important in this process. It is a tutor job to explain the topic, find out…

Be supportive of their difficulties, mistakes and challenges. Everyone deserves the chance to learn and part of learning is making mistakes. If mistakes are always treated as awful, they still won't stop. However, the student will feel terrible every time they make one and will either push themselves too far, or lose motivation to learn. I'm…

That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

Be patient, be attentive to their learning styles, involve them in the process of learning, focus on their strengths and not just the areas that they’re struggling with and make sure I fully understand the tasks that they are required to do so I can best support them to complete these. As a tutor, I encourage each student and show patience when something is 'difficult', 'boring', or the student doesn't think they 'are good at this subject'. This includes finding learning methods that will best engage the individual in different situations. 1) Experience in understanding how best to motivate and teach different people, depending…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable learning the material the school gives them and to develop good study skills. Students have different learning styles and process information at different paces. A school can't accomodate all the individual learning styles of their students, but tutoring…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are build a student's confidence while creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment. A good tutor helps a student understand concepts, develop problem-solving skills and become more independent learners. I also think it's important to be patient, celebrate progress and make students…

Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
