Whilst ensuring the student learns or develops topics/skills is important, fostering an interest and curiosity in the subject is more important in my opinion. Through the support of teachers and students in my schooling I have grown a deep interest in maths, science and literature, which makes study and learning these subjects easy! I am patient,…

The most important thing I think is for the tutor to build confidence in a student. To do this, I believe continual encouragement is required and something I always aim to do. Patience and the ability to remain calm at all times. I am also very persistent and will try a variety of methods that will allow the student to see concepts from a variety…

I think the most important thing, and probably the greatest thing I can give to students is inspiration. My subject knowledge is something they should be able to take for granted. If I can inspire them, then they will go on learning long after their contact with me is ended. In addition, the passion is another vital element for math tutoring. I…

Guide, but not tell. A tutor should be able to read the students mind if he fails to do so he has failed in his job. Understanding what the student needs and give the student what the student lacks and preserve and enhance what the student already has, this is what tutoring is all about. I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

The most important things that one can do for a student is make the learning material relatable to them. Which means that giving real world examples and relating the material to something of importance. The most important thing is to fully understand the doubts of the student and their lack of understanding in different areas of a subject. It is then necessary to device a personalised plan of action for that student, to strengthen those concepts and help them gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. This is the most crucial thing a…

Inside ArmadaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Dishita focused on interpreting time-series data, including mean-smoothing and deseasonalisation techniques, and practiced applying the 68-95-99.7 rule for normal distributions using exam questions.

Year 11 Emily worked through scatterplots and transformations in statistics, consolidating skills by tackling residuals and regression problems from recent school assessments.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Josh revised financial mathematics concepts such as compound interest calculations and explored surface area and volume of composite shapes through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4, one student often attempted times tables and complex multiplication mentally rather than writing out working, which led to confusion and missed steps—she sometimes forgets to add zeros when moving to the next line.

Notably, in VCE Maths (Year 12), a different student relied on reading exam questions quickly without highlighting key information or taking structured notes. As noted: Needs to read the question carefully. Use a sheet of paper to track reading.

In both cases, skipping systematic written processes made it harder to spot errors and slowed progress during challenging tasks or under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Armadale recently saw Dishita, a Year 12 student, begin using the 'talk-aloud' strategy to break down complex standardised score questions—something she previously found daunting. She's now highlighting key details in exam problems and independently choosing the right formulas.

Meanwhile, Rose (Year 6) has moved from needing step-by-step support with long division to confidently solving multi-digit problems and tackling time conversion questions with little prompting.

For a younger learner, Jacob is no longer relying solely on his number line for single-digit addition; he now attempts mental calculations first and checks his work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malvern Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The King David School - The Rebecca Magid Centre.
