I think identifying the misunderstanding and making sure their foundation is solid. As long as they understand the content, they will be able to answer the questions! I would say I'm very patient, and due to my fluency in English, I'm able to easily get the child to understand the content. I also excelled throughout school, and have a high GPA at…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. I was an inclusion support assistant at a primary school, working with various kids with learning difficulties and disabilities. This has given me…

I consider encouragement and patience as the most important things a tutor can do for a student. As school can be stressful, being supportive and persistent toward the student is beneficial and can make them more receptive to wanting to learn. Having patience is also very important for tutors as some students may not understand a concept and the…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I always felt inspired to study after my sessions with…

Helping the student not only improve their studies, but learn how to better study and learn independently when at home/in school. the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the concept they have taught is clearly understood. One wrongly interpreted concept, especially in maths can be a huge hindrance in understanding other concepts in higher grades. Thus solving all the questions that students have with clarity is the tutor's biggest…

In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. As we have all heard: give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. :)…

A tutor provides a supportive environment for their students. This is most true for the students who struggle the most, who may need more help than their peers who don't find the topic as difficult. Students, in my opinion, are like clay that can be molded in any way. And if I have such a wonderful opportunity, I'll do everything in my power to make the most of it. I think the most important aspect of being a tutor is to assist students in coming up with their own interpretations, especially in english, by expanding their skill set. By giving students the tools to succeed but letting them work through the problems first, it allows them to put forward any errors or miscommunications, which can then be…

A tutor can explain the practical applications of the subject he or she teaches in real life. As a tutor I can make my students visualise the concepts which cannot be grasped instantly. Inside AscotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jackson worked on the unit circle and bearings, using diagrams to reinforce understanding of angle measurement.

For Year 10, Emma focused on solving quadratic equations and graphing their turning points as well as intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised differentiation and anti-differentiation techniques for assignments, including practical applications with sine and cosine functions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 mathematics, a student hesitated to incorporate draft feedback into their assignment—"he used notes from the draft but still repeated small errors," one tutor noted—which meant improvements weren't fully realised in the final version.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student frequently left out full working for algebraic problems, especially when rearranging equations; skipping these steps made it difficult to pinpoint calculation issues later.

In Year 4, another learner's lack of confidence with multiplication led to second-guessing and slowed progress during mental arithmetic drills. Missed chances to solidify skills created visible frustration after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Ascot tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started explaining her own steps out loud when graphing quadratics—something she'd always left to the tutor before.

In a recent high school session, a Year 12 student tackled tricky inequalities independently for the first time; previously, he'd freeze and wait for prompts but now sets up the solution himself.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student surprised his tutor by checking his multiplication answers without being asked and correcting two mistakes on his own before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ascot State School.
